Only one week of vacation and Costa Rica is calling? Good news: seven days are enough to taste the essentials — a volcano, the rainforest, wildlife, and a beach — as long as you don't try to see everything. Here's how to build a coherent one-week itinerary, with a day-by-day example, two variants, and our field advice.

Is a week in Costa Rica enough?

Yes, for a first trip. The classic trap is stringing together five regions in seven days: you end up spending your vacation on the road. Costa Rica is small on the map, but the mountain roads are slow. The golden rule: a maximum of two to three bases, linked by drives of 2 to 3 hours.

A one-week itinerary example, day by day

The itinerary below combines Arenal volcano and the central Pacific: a great classic, smooth and varied, ideal for a first time.

Two variants to suit your wishes

Intense nature variant

Practical tips for a successful week

• Sleep near the parks so you can leave early: wildlife is most active at daybreak.
• Don't underestimate the driving times : distances are short but the roads are winding.
