Tamarindo Beach Beginner-friendly beach par excellence in Costa Rica. Regular but gentle waves, sandy bottom, surf schools lining the beach (Witch's Rock, Iguana Surf, Kelly's Surf Shop). Group class, 2 hours, $40-60 All-inclusive (board, wetsuit, photos). In the south, more technical waves (Playa Langosta, Playa Grande). Private lesson: $80–100 per person for 2 hours.
Tamarindo's signature experience: catamaran at sunset, departure 2 PM - 3 PM from the beach. A 5-minute boat ride (or 30-minute drive) north of Tamarindo, the Las Baulas Marine National Park protect Big Beach, one of the last nesting sites of the Leatherback turtle (up to 2 m, 700 kg). Season October to February, peak in December. Strictly supervised night hike (certified guides, red headlamps, small groups). An intense experience. ~$60 per person, 3 hours.
The'Tamarindo Estuary shelter protected mangroves with American crocodiles, Green iguanas, tropical birds (kingfishers, herons, frigatebirds). A peaceful kayaking or paddleboarding tour, 2–3 hours, suitable for beginners. High tide: best enjoyed at high tide to fully experience the canals. ~$45–60 per person for a guided tour.
30 minutes south of Tamarindo, two iconic beaches: Avellanas Beach (paradise for intermediate-expert surfers, relaxed atmosphere, consistent waves, beach restaurants like Lola's with its famous pig) and Black Beach (Technical vagueness, black volcanic sand, less crowded beach hut atmosphere).
