The capital Costa Rican surfing

Tamarindo — small coastal town on the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, nicknamed «Tamagringo» by the locals because of the large North American community. Since the 1980s, it has become the Costa Rican surf capital, today it's a learned balance between an authentic surf lifestyle, international restaurants, lively beach clubs, and protected fauna (leatherback turtles 2 km away).

The experience is multi-rhythms Morning surf on the main beach (perfect for beginners), afternoon beach relaxation or kayaking in the mangrove estuary (crocodiles, tropical birds), Sunset ritual on Tamarindo Beach (a daily gathering spot for travelers), a sunset boat tour with snorkeling and drinks, and wildlife watching leatherback turtles at Playa Grande (Nightly departure November-February). 1 hour from Liberia (LIR).

Our on-site team (local DMC since 2018) recommendation: 3 nights is ideal in Tamarindo — 1 day surf lessons + sunset, 1 day estuary kayaking + Playa Grande turtles (in season), 1 day Playa Avellanas or catamaran. Top combination: Arenal → Tamarindo to conclude the circuit, or as a single base with Guanacaste excursions.
