Why is this guide different? We are not a European publishing house. Toucan Discovery is a local receptive based in Costa Rica. 🤫 Local secret Go to Rio Celeste early in the morning (opens at 8 am). Tourist buses arrive after 10 am. And take the trail to the viewpoint, not just the waterfall — the view of Tenorio Volcano is spectacular and there's no one there.

National Geographic called it «the most biologically intense place on the planet.» The Osa Peninsula is Costa Rica in its wildest form: tapirs, macaws, spider monkeys, and a solitude that few places still offer.

🤫 Local secret Sámara is the safest beach in the country for swimming — ideal for children. And if you want the most spectacular sunset, go to Playa Barrigona (15 minutes north of Nosara). It's an almost deserted beach, hidden at the end of a dirt road.

🤫 Local secret In San Gerardo de Dota, ask for «Don Efraín» – he's the local guide who finds the resplendent quetzal on every outing for the past 30 years. And in Monteverde, avoid the biological reserve on weekends: opt for the less-known but equally magical Santa Elena Cloud Forest, which is three times less crowded.

Full day: Morning zip-lining (Arenal Sky or Mistico), afternoon Lake Arenal. Option: Class II-III rafting on the Balsa River.
Celeste River and the route to Monteverde

Early departure to Tenorio Volcano National Park. Hike to the waterfall and the turquoise river. Continue to Monteverde late in the day.
💡 Tip: The Arenal-Monteverde route is splendid but winding. Leave with plenty of time, and enjoy the views.

Suspension bridges in the morning (go to the opening). Visit a coffee farm in the afternoon. Guided night tour—snakes, frogs, spectacular insects.
Road to the Pacific

Guided park tour with a naturalist (essential for spotting animals). Capuchin monkeys, sloths, iguanas. Swim at the park's beaches.
💡 Tip: Closed on Tuesdays. Arrive before 7 AM to avoid crowds and see more animals.
Pacific Coast Relax

Two days of free rhythm. Options: Uvita beaches (the whale's tail seen from the sky), mangrove kayaking, snorkeling, or simply hammock and sunset. In season (July-Oct): whale watching.
Return to San José and departure

Return route. If the flight is late: stop at the Sarchí market for local crafts or a quick visit to the Orosí Valley.

  • Speed — 40 km/h in the city, 60-80 on rural roads, 100 on highways
  • GPS — Use Waze, not Google Maps (more reliable here)
  • Bridges — Frequent one-lane bridges: «GIVE WAY» = give priority to the other
  • Night Avoid driving after 6 p.m. (poorly lit roads, animals)
  • Reality — 100 km = 2 to 3 hours. The roads are winding, accept it

What the guides They don't tell you

Real advice from people who have lived in Costa Rica for years.

  • 🤫 The "sodas" (small family-run restaurants) serve the best casado in the country for $5–8. Forget about hotel restaurants.
  • 🤫 Book national parks online, but hotels at the last minute during the green season – you'll get unbeatable rates.
  • 🤫 A 4x2 SUV is sufficient for the 90% routes. The myth that a 4x4 is required is perpetuated by rental companies.
  • 🤫 Animals are most active between 5:30-7 AM and 4-6 PM. Adjust your visits accordingly.
  • 🤫 Never plan more than 3-4 stops in 10 days. The #1 mistake travelers make: wanting to see everything and experience nothing.

Rice and Beans ~$3-5

The national breakfast: rice and black beans sautéed together, accompanied by eggs, fried plantain, and sour cream. Each family has its own recipe. Try several.

Traditional Costa Rican dish ~$5-8 in soda

The quintessential lunch dish. Rice, beans, salad, plantain, and a choice of protein (chicken, fish, pork). In a family-run «soda,» it's the best value for money in the country.

Caribbean Coconut Rice and Beans ~$8-12

Don't confuse it with gallo pinto! On the Caribbean coast, rice is cooked in coconut milk. Served with jerk chicken or fish, it's pure Jamaican influence.

High-altitude coffee

Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world. Visit a plantation in the Central Valley or Monteverde: from plant to cup, you'll never drink your coffee the same way again.

🍫 Bribri Cacao

For the Bribris (South Caribbean), cocoa is sacred. Women from the community prepare the traditional drink during cultural visits—a unique gustatory and human experience.

The local beer ~$2-3

Imperial is the best known, but also try Pilsen and the exploding craft beers (Treintaycinco, Lake Arenal Brewery). Cheers!

💡 Bust the 4x4 myth

A 4x2 SUV like the Hyundai Tucson is sufficient for all the routes in this guide. Savings: 15–20 TP per day, or 150–200 TP on a 10-day trip.

💡 Drinking water = invisible savings

Tap water is safe in 95% of the country. A reusable water bottle saves you about $1.45 per day per person in plastic bottles. Good for your wallet and for the planet.
