The Southern Caribbean of Costa Rica — between Cahuita and Panama — is another planet within the country. Iconic beaches right next door: Cocles (surfing), Punta Uva (family snorkeling, pink sand), Manzanillo (wild refuge). To the north: Cahuita National Park with its reef and its sloths. 4 and a half hours from San José.
Our on-the-ground advice (DMC on site since 2018): At least 3–4 nights in the southern Caribbean—1 day in Puerto Viejo + beaches, 1 day in Cahuita + Sloth Sanctuary, 1 day in Manzanillo + Bribri cacao tour. The rainy season is reversed (dry in Sept–Oct and Feb–March), so plan accordingly.

The village Puerto Viejo is the epicenter of Costa Rica's Afro-Caribbean culture. Colorful wooden houses, bikes everywhere, a laid-back reggae vibe, restaurants serving Rondón, jerk chicken, rice & beans with coconut milk. Beautiful beaches all around: Playa Cocles (surfing), Punta Uva (snorkel, lazy), Manzanillo (Wilderness refuge trails). Cacao backcountry, Bribri Indian.
To the north of Puerto Viejo, the Cahuita National Park protect 1,067 ha of jungle + coral reef. Mythical 8 km coastal trail along the Caribbean beach (sloths, capuchins, raccoons easily visible). Snorkeling on the reef (visibility varies by season). Entrance by donation. Playa Blanca = deserted sand beach. 1 hour from Puerto Viejo.
Three iconic beaches between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo: Playa Cocles (long, surf, beach bars), Punta Uva (pink sand, turquoise water, snorkel, family swim), Manzanillo (Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, sloths nearby). Car, bike, or taxi to get around. Each one deserves its own day.
Two unique animal rehabilitation centers: Sloth Sanctuary (Penshurst, 30 min north) — world's first dedicated to orphaned or injured sloths, educational visit. Jaguar Rescue Center (Puerto Viejo) — Monkeys, sloths, birds, and reptiles are cared for and released. No jaguars (historical name). Tours last 1 hour, ~$25 per person.

Puerto Viejo and Caribbean villages = walking/biking. Rent a $5 for 10 per day anywhere. Beaches are 5–15 minutes away by bike. A car is only necessary for Cahuita or the cacao tour.

Cahuita Reef = top snorkeling but visibility varies by season/rain. Punta Uva = calm swimming + gentle snorkeling. Manzanillo is wilder. Local dry season = maximum visibility.
