The soul Afro-Caribbean of Costa Rica

The Southern Caribbean of Costa Rica — between Cahuita and Panama — is another planet within the country. Strong Afro-Jamaican influences (languages, music, cuisine), Bribri community indigenous people living in harmony with the jungle, and Cahuita coral reef (The only one in Costa Rica). Everything here is lived at a reggae rhythm, by bike, with feet in the sand.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the main town—colorful little wooden houses, trendy cafés run by expats, beach bars with live music, and restaurants serving rondón and jerk chicken. Iconic beaches right next door: Cocles (surfing), Punta Uva (family snorkeling, pink sand), Manzanillo (wild refuge). To the north: Cahuita National Park with its reef and its sloths. 4 and a half hours from San José.

Our on-the-ground advice (DMC on site since 2018): At least 3–4 nights in the southern Caribbean—1 day in Puerto Viejo + beaches, 1 day in Cahuita + Sloth Sanctuary, 1 day in Manzanillo + Bribri cacao tour. The rainy season is reversed (dry in Sept–Oct and Feb–March), so plan accordingly.
