The roof of Honduras & Lenca memory

Gracias — a small colonial town of 12,000 inhabitants at 1,000 m altitude, in the department of Lempira (southwest Honduras). A singular history: capital of the Real Audiencia de los Confines from 1544 to 1549 — seat of Spanish colonial power for all ofCentral America (from the Yucatán to Costa Rica), until it moved to Antigua Guatemala. Castillo San Cristóbal (1853) on the hill. Cobblestones, whitewashed facades, central plaza.

But today Gracias is above all the gateway to the Ruta Lenca. The Lencas = an Indigenous Honduran-Salvadoran people, whose chief Lempira (the Master of the Sierra) resisted the conquistadors and was killed in 1537 — a national hero, the Honduran currency is named after him. Lenca villages nearby: The Field (ancestral black pottery), San Manuel de Colohete (unique 1750 cathedral), Caiquín, Belén Gualcho. Celaque National Park = cloud forest + Cerro Las Minas (2,870 m, the highest point in Honduras). Aguas Termales de Presidente at the foot of the park. A tradition of Lenca highland coffee.
