Garifuna · About Trujillo

The cradle Colonial & Afro-Caribbean

Trujillo — the oldest continental American colonial port, where Christopher Columbus set foot on August 14, 1502 during his 4th voyage (first mass in continental America here). Later, base of Spanish colonial fleets, attacked multiple times by pirates. William Walker, the American filibuster who wanted to conquer AC, was shot in Trujillo in 1860. Fortaleza Santa Bárbara (1565) still standing.

But Trujillo's wealth is today Garifuna. The Garifuna are descendants of'Africans and Caribbean Amerindians, deported from Saint Vincent by the British in 1797 (5,000 people) arrived in Roatán and then dispersed along the Caribbean coast of AC. Their culture (Punta dance, Garifuna language, gastronomyis ranked UNESCO Intangible Heritage In 2001, Trujillo and its neighboring villages (Santa Fe, Guadalupe, San Antonio) = World Garifuna Capital. Tropical Caribbean beaches, turquoise waters, palm trees, relaxed atmosphere. 1 hour west: Screen and Jeannette Kawas National Park/Punta Sal. At 3 AM west: La Ceiba.

Our on-site recommendation: 3 nights ideal — 1 day Trujillo (city, fort, Maya beach), 1 day Garifuna villages (Santa Fe, Guadalupe), 1 day Tela/Punta Sal optional. Queen combination: La Ceiba (3h west) → Trujillo. Ideal for Colonial history enthusiasts + Afro-Caribbean culture who want to avoid the crowds of Roatán.

  • Driving at night CA-13 winding, little lighting. Drive during the day.
  • Hurricane season June-November: Storm risk. Check weather for September.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
