Preparing your trip to El Salvador: practical guide 2026
El Salvador is Central America's smallest country — and the easiest to get around. Here's everything you need to know before you go.
How much time to plan for
Seven days is enough for a full tour. El Salvador covers 21,000 km² — the size of Brittany. You cross the country in 4 hours east to west. Seven days cover the capital, the Ruta de las Flores, a volcano, Suchitoto and the Pacific coast. Ten days add the Bahía de Jiquilisco, El Imposible National Park and the Maya archaeological sites. Two weeks open up combos with neighboring Guatemala or Honduras.
My favorite format : 10 days, with 2 nights San Salvador, 2 nights Ruta de las Flores, 2 nights Suchitoto, 3 nights Pacific coast, 1 transit night.
What budget to plan for
El Salvador has used the US dollar (USD) since 2001. No exchange, no conversion — a considerable practical advantage.
Economic : €30-50/day/person. Hostels, chicken buses, street pupuserías. El Salvador is the cheapest country in the region.
Comfort : €70-120/day/person. Charming hotels, private transfers, guided excursions. The value for money is remarkable.
Premium : €150-300/day/person. Boutique hotels, private guides, tailor-made experiences. The high-end offer is developing fast, especially on the coast and in Suchitoto.
Surprising budget post : the food. You eat for almost nothing in El Salvador. A pupusa costs 0.25-0.50 USD, a full market meal 2-3 USD.
When to go
Dry season (November-April): the best period. Blue skies, temperatures 25-32°C depending on altitude. December-February is the (modest) tourist peak.
Rainy season (May-October): daily tropical showers in the afternoon (1-2 hours). The vegetation is lush. Prices drop 15-25%. Excellent surf year-round.
Micro-season : the waves are best from March to October (southern Pacific swell). International surf competitions are held at El Tunco.
How to get around
Chicken buses : the people's transport. Former American school buses repurposed, painted in bright colors. 0.25-1 USD a ride. Frequent, slow, authentic.
Microbuses : shared vans faster than the chicken buses. A dense network. 0.50-2 USD.
Car rental : the best option for freedom. Main roads paved and well marked. 30-50 USD/day. El Salvador is small enough to cover entirely by car.
Uber : works in San Salvador and the main cities. Reliable and cheap.
Formalities and Health
Visa : no visa for French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals (stays up to 90 days, CA-4 agreement). Passport valid 6 months after entry.
Vaccines None required. Recommended: Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid.
Security : El Salvador has dramatically improved its security since 2019. The crime rate has plummeted. Tourist areas are safe. Standard precautions: no ostentation, vigilance in big cities at night, quality transport.
Bitcoin : El Salvador was the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender (2021). In practice, the dollar remains dominant everywhere. The Chivo Wallet app works in some shops, but it's not essential.
