Salvador Itineraries: 7, 10, and 14 Days to See It All

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America—and it's its biggest asset. Here, everything is within reach.

Why is El Salvador suitable for short trips?

El Salvador is 21,000 km² — the size of Brittany. The maximum distance between two tourist spots rarely exceeds a 3-hour drive. No internal flights, no complicated connections: a rental car or a good bus network is enough. It's the ideal country for a 7 to 14-day trip with no downtime.

The main roads are in good condition. Short distances allow you to combine volcanoes, beaches, colonial villages, and archaeological sites without spending your life in a vehicle. This is rare in Central America.

7-Day Itinerary: The Essentials of El Salvador

Day 1 - San Salvador. Arrival and check-in at Zona Rosa or Colonia Escalón. Visit the historic center: Metropolitan Cathedral, National Palace, Central Market for your first pupusas.

Day 2 - Santa Ana Volcano + Coatepeque Lake. Morning hike to the Santa Ana crater (4 hours round trip, guide mandatory). Descend to Lake Coatepeque for the afternoon – swim in the crater.

Day 3 — Ruta de las Flores. Juayúa (weekend food festival), Ataco (street art, high-altitude cafes), Apaneca. Overnight in Ataco or Juayúa.

Day 4 — Ruta de las Flores + coast transfer. Morning in Apaneca (Laguna Verde, coffee plantation). Afternoon, drive to the Pacific coast. Night in El Tunco.

Day 5 - Pacific Coast. Surfing or relaxing in El Tunco. Excursion possible to El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach). Sunset on black volcanic sand.

Day 6 — Suchitoto. Transfer to Suchitoto (2.5 hours). Colonial village, art galleries, Lake Suchitlán by boat. Overnight stay.

Day 7 — Suchitoto + return to San Salvador. Free morning in Suchitoto. Return to San Salvador for the flight.

This circuit covers the four pillars of El Salvador: volcanoes, coffee culture, the Pacific, and colonial heritage.

10-day itinerary: add archaeology and nature

Resume the 7-day itinerary and add:

Day 7 — Joya de Cerén + San Andrés. From Suchitoto, transfer to the archaeological sites. Joya de Cerén (UNESCO) is the «Pompeii of the Americas» – a Mayan village frozen under ashes in 600 AD. San Andrés is a ceremonial pyramid 5 km away. Overnight in San Salvador.

Day 8 — El Impossible + West Coast. El Imposible National Park — El Salvador's largest forest reserve, 400 tree species, marked trails. Overnight in Barra de Santiago or return to the Pacific coast.

Day 9 — La Libertad + Handicrafts. Port of La Libertad (fish market, fresh ceviche), route to Cihuatán (lesser-known pre-Mayan archaeological site). Return to San Salvador.

Day 10 — Return flight. According to the flight schedule, last visit to the MARTE or shopping at the Mercado de Artesanías.

14-Day Itinerary: In-Depth El Salvador + Extension

The first 10 days follow the circuit above, then:

Days 11-12 — Gulf of Fonseca + East. Eastward route: San Miguel, then the Gulf of Fonseca. Boat trip to the islands (Meanguera, Conchagüita). Volcanic landscapes, fishing communities, zero tourists.

Day 13 — Perquín + Ruta de la Paz. The Museum of the Revolution in Perquín tells the story of the civil war without shying away from it. The Ruta de la Paz (Peace Route) winds through the Morazán mountains – pine forests, rebuilt villages, murals. This is the deep El Salvador.

Day 14 — Return to San Salvador + flight. Long drive back (4h). Plan a flight for the end of the day.

Combine Salvador + Guatemala or Honduras

El Salvador naturally combines with its neighbors. Two classic options:

El Salvador + Guatemala (14 days) 7 days in El Salvador (essential circuit) + land transfer to Guatemala (4h to Antigua). 7 days in Guatemala (Antigua, Lake Atitlan, Tikal). The contrast is striking — two neighboring countries, two worlds.

El Salvador + Honduras (10-12 days) 7 days in San Salvador + transfer to Copán Ruinas (Honduras, 5 hours from San Salvador). 3-5 days in Honduras (Copán, Lake Yojoa). The quintessential Maya archaeological route.
