Costa Rica 2026 guide

Pura Vida,
it's not a slogan

Costa Rica can't be visited. It's lived. This guide has been written by those who live there, for those who want to truly discover it.

A small country,
a immensity experiences

Wedged between two oceans, Costa Rica's 51,100 km² of diversity defies the imagination. Cloud forests, active volcanoes, wild beaches, coral reefs, impenetrable jungles - it's all just a few hours' drive away.

But what makes this country unique is its relationship with nature. Here, 30% of the land is protected. Animals cross the roads, not cars. And the most spoken word - Pura Vida - is not a tourist expression: it's a philosophy of life.

Why this guide is different We're not a Parisian publisher. Toucan Discovery is a local tour operator based in Costa Rica. Every tip, every address, every itinerary in this guide comes from our daily field experience. When we say «leave at 6 a.m. to see the toucans in Tortuguero», it's because we did it yesterday.

Discover Costa Rica
by experience

Forget the map. Choose emotion. Each region promises a different atmosphere, a different rhythm, a different encounter.

Rio Celeste waterfall, Volcán Tenorio, Costa Rica
Arenal - Tenorio - La Fortuna

Adventure at the foot of the volcanoes

A perfect volcano as a backdrop, turquoise waterfalls hidden in the jungle, natural hot springs to end the day. It's postcard Costa Rica - only better when you know the right plans.

  • Hiking the Río Celeste - the bluest river in the world
  • Natural hot springs (not the hotel ones, the real ones)
  • Zipline above the canopy overlooking Arenal
🤫 Secret de local Go to the Río Celeste early in the morning (opening at 8 a.m.). After 10 a.m., the tourist buses arrive. And take the path to the mirador, not just the waterfall - the view of the Tenorio volcano is spectacular and there's no one there.
Caribbean beach Cahuita Costa Rica
Cahuita - Puerto Viejo - Tortuguero

The Caribbean rhythm

The other Costa Rica. Here, reggae replaces salsa, the cuisine is coconut milk, and time stands still. From Cahuita to Puerto Viejo, it's an immersion in Afro-Caribbean culture. Further north, Tortuguero and its jungle canals offer raw nature.

  • Watch green turtles lay their eggs in Tortuguero (July-October)
  • Snorkeling in the Cahuita reef - the country's only living reef
  • Taste coconut rice & beans in a Puerto Viejo soda shop
🤫 Secret de local In Cahuita, the national park operates on a free donation basis. Enter through the Cahuita village entrance (not Puerto Vargas) and pay what you like. The trail skirts the beach and then crosses the jungle - take a mask and snorkel for the swimming break in the middle of the trail.
Corcovado rainforest Osa peninsula Costa Rica
Osa - Corcovado - Drake

Where jungle meets ocean

National Geographic has called it «the most biologically intense place on the planet». The Osa Peninsula is Costa Rica at its wildest: tapirs, macaws, spider monkeys, and a solitude that few places still offer.

  • 2-3 day trek in Corcovado Park with naturalist guide
  • Diving or snorkeling at Isla del Caño - manta rays and sharks
  • Kayaking in the mangroves of Golfo Dulce at sunset
🤫 Secret de local Corcovado requires a guide and a SINAC reservation in advance. Book at least 30 days in advance, especially in high season. The entrance via Sirena station is the most immersive, but also the most physical - plan for a good level of walking.
Sunset surfing Santa Teresa Costa Rica
Santa Teresa - Nosara - Sámara

The wild Pacific coast

A paradise for surfing, yoga and letting go. Santa Teresa attracts digital nomads from all over the world, Nosara is the temple of wellness, and Sámara remains the secret of families and lovers. The Nicoya Peninsula is also home to one of the world's 5 Blue Zones.

  • Sunset surfing at Playa Santa Teresa
  • Nosara yoga retreat in a jungle-beach setting
  • Kayaking and snorkeling on Isla Chora from Sámara
🤫 Secret de local Sámara is the safest beach in the country for swimming - ideal with children. And if you want the most spectacular sunset, go to Playa Barrigona (15 min north of Nosara). It's an almost deserted beach, hidden away at the end of a dirt track.
Cloud forest suspension bridge Monteverde Costa Rica
Monteverde - San Gerardo de Dota

The secret mountain

At altitude, Costa Rica reveals a different face. The Monteverde cloud forest is a suspended world of orchids, hummingbirds and mist. San Gerardo de Dota is the best place in the world to observe the resplendent quetzal - the sacred bird of the Mayans.

  • Suspended bridges in the Monteverde canopy
  • Quetzal watching in San Gerardo (December-April)
  • Guided nocturnal tour - another jungle wakes up at night
🤫 Secret de local In San Gerardo de Dota, ask for «Don Efraín» - he's the local guide who's been finding the quetzal on every outing for 30 years. And in Monteverde, avoid the biological reserve at weekends: prefer the Bosque Nuboso Santa Elena, less well-known but just as magical and 3 times less crowded.

Preparing your trip

Before go to

Everything you need to know, in one place. From the people who live here.

🌤️

When to go?

  • Dry season (Dec-April) - Guaranteed sun, high season, more people
  • Green season (May-Nov) - Afternoon rains, lush nature, -30% on hotels
  • Caribbean coast - Reverse climate: driest in September-October
  • Our advice - May, June and November are the best compromise: low prices, few tourists, beautiful nature
🚗

Driving in Costa Rica

  • Speed - 40 km/h city, 60-80 highway, 100 freeway
  • GPS - Use Waze, not Google Maps (more reliable here)
  • Bridges - Frequent single-lane bridges: «CEDA EL PASO» = priority to the other lane
  • Night - Avoid driving after 6 p.m. (poorly lit roads, animals)
  • Reality - 100 km = 2 to 3 hours. The roads are winding, so accept it

Essential checklist

  • SPF50+ biodegradable sun cream (reef-safe)
  • Mosquito repellent + rechargeable bracelet
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Dry bag for excursions
  • Compact binoculars for wildlife observation
  • Reusable water bottle (tap water is drinkable)
  • Light rain jacket (even in dry season)
📱

Connectivity & convenience

  • Holafly eSIM - Unlimited Internet on landing, no physical SIM card required
  • Currency - Colón (CRC), but US dollars are accepted everywhere
  • Tip - 10% often included in the restaurant («servicio»)
  • Adapter - US plugs (type A/B), no adapter needed from the US
  • National parks - Mandatory online booking (SINAC) for Manuel Antonio and Corcovado

What the guides don't tell you

Real advice from those who have lived in Costa Rica for years.

  • 🤫 Sodas« (small family-run restaurants) serve the best casado in the country for $5-8. Forget hotel restaurants.
  • 🤫 Book your national parks online, but hotels at the last minute in green season - you'll get unbeatable rates.
  • 🤫 A 4x2 SUV is sufficient for 90% itineraries. The myth of the obligatory 4x4 is maintained by car rental companies.
  • 🤫 Animals are most active between 5.30am-7am and 4pm-6pm. Adapt your visits accordingly.
  • 🤫 Never plan more than 3-4 stages in 10 days. Travelers' #1 mistake: wanting to see everything and experience nothing.
Flavors

Taste the Costa Rica

Tica cuisine is simple, generous and surprising. Here's what you absolutely must try.

Locally roasted coffee from a plantation in La Fortuna Costa Rica

🍚 Gallo Pinto ~$3-5

The national breakfast: rice and black beans sautéed together, served with eggs, fried plantain and sour cream. Every family has its own recipe. Try several.

🥘 Casado ~$5-8 with soda

The perfect lunchtime dish. Rice, beans, salad, plantain and your choice of protein (chicken, fish, pork). In a family-run «soda», it's the best value for money in the country.

🥥 Caribbean Rice & Beans ~$8-12

Not to be confused with gallo pinto! On the Caribbean coast, rice is cooked in coconut milk. Accompanied by jerk chicken or fish, it's pure Jamaican influence.

☕ High-altitude coffee

Costa Rica produces some of the finest coffee in the world. Visit a finca in the Central Valley or in Monteverde: from plant to cup, you'll never drink coffee the same way again.

🍫 Cacao Bribri

Among the Bribris (South Caribbean), cocoa is sacred. The women of the community prepare the traditional drink during cultural visits - a unique taste and human experience.

🍺 Local beer ~$2-3

Imperial is the best-known, but you can also try Pilsen and the exploding craft beers (Treintaycinco, Lake Arenal Brewery). Cheers!

Biodiversity

The calendar
of the nature

When to see what, where. Costa Rica offers a different show every month.

📍 Uvita / Bahía Ballena (South Pacific)

Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world with two whale seasons. The South Pacific offers the best whale-watching opportunities.

🦅

Resplendent Quetzal

December → April (peak in March)
📍 San Gerardo de Dota / Monteverde

The sacred bird of the Mayans, with its 60 cm emerald tail. San Gerardo de Dota offers the best birdwatching in the world.

🐢

Leatherback & Olive Ridley

Sept → March (Lute) - All year round (Olive)
📍 Playa Grande / Ostional

In Ostional, the arribada: hundreds of thousands of olive ridley turtles arrive at the same time. A phenomenon unique in the world.

🦜

Scarlet macaws

All year round
📍 Corcovado / Carara / Osa

The great red parrots of Costa Rica. Carara is the most accessible spot, Corcovado the most spectacular.

🐸

Frogs & amphibians

May → November (rainy season)
📍 Tortuguero / Sarapiquí / Arenal

The red-eyed tree frog, symbol of Costa Rica, is most active in the green season. Night tours at this time are extraordinary.

Commitment

Travel manager

Costa Rica is a world pioneer in sustainable tourism. To travel here is to contribute to a model that protects what it shows. Here's how to make a difference.

🌿

Choose CST-certified accommodation

The Sustainable Tourism Certificate (STC) guarantees a real commitment to water management, local employment and waste reduction.

🤝

Visit communities with respect

The Bribris, Borucas and Malekus open their villages to visitors - always via official community programs, never freelance.

🐾

Respect wildlife

Never touch wild animals. No selfies with sloths. 2 meters minimum. A certified guide knows how to observe without disturbing.

💧

Reduce your footprint

Tap water is drinkable: carry a water bottle. Use reef-safe sunscreen. Say no to plastic straws (most restaurants have already done so).

🌎

Toucan Discovery commitment

We work exclusively with local service providers, give preference to certified accommodation and donate part of our income to the communities.

Budget

How much does it cost really
a trip to Costa Rica?

Myth busting. Here are the real prices, as seen from the field.

🍽️
$5-8
Soda meal
🍺
$2-3
Local beer
~$1.10/L
Petrol
🚗
$40-70/d
SUV 4x2 rental
🏨
$80-150/n
Mid-range hotel
🎯
$30-80
Activity/excursion

❌ The classic mistake

  • 6 stages in 12 days
  • 4x4 «just in case» (+$15-20/day)
  • Hotel restaurants every evening
  • High season only
  • Everything booked 6 months in advance at full price

Result: stress, exploded budget, nothing seen in depth

✅ Toucan expert advice

  • 3-4 stages maximum in 10-14 days
  • SUV 4x2 (sufficient for 90% roads)
  • Sodas + local markets (better AND cheaper)
  • Green season = -30% on accommodation
  • Decentralized destinations = -25% (Bijagua, Sámara...)

Result: savings, human rhythm, profound experiences

💡 Green Season

May, June and November: -30% on hotels, greener nature, fewer tourists. Rain usually falls in the afternoon - mornings are splendid.

💡 Break the 4x4 myth

A 4x2 SUV such as the Hyundai Tucson is sufficient for all the itineraries in this guide. Economy: $15-20/day, or $150-200 on a 10-day trip.

💡 Drinking water = invisible savings

Tap water is safe in 95% of the country. A reusable water bottle saves you ~$5/day/person in plastic bottles. Good for the budget AND the planet.
