About Isla Holbox

The island that resists time

200 km north of Cancún, separated from the mainland by the Yalahau lagoon, Holbox is a strip of sand 42 km long and 2 km wide. No cars on the island — electric golf carts, bikes and horses. It is here, in the Yum Balam biosphere reserve, that whale sharks gather every summer in record concentrations.

No shopping malls, no hotel chains, no concrete. Just painted cabins, boutique hotels opening onto the sand, street art murals on every corner, and mythical sunsets on the western point. The resistance to Yucatán over-tourism.

Our field advice: 3 nights minimum to truly unplug. And plan your access — you have to take a ferry from Chiquilá (25 min, $14 round trip, last departure 9:30pm).

On Holbox, the cuisine is marine, fresh, local. Fish comes off the boat in the morning, lobster is eaten in every possible way. And there is ONE pizza that made the island famous worldwide.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • ❌ Arriving on Holbox in August: Mexican + European tourist peak, saturated hotels, prices +50%. Aim for July or November instead.
  • ❌ Booking a whale shark outing out of season: June → Sept 15 officially. Outside that window, it's a scam or uncertified boats.
  • ❌ Touching the whale sharks: strict SEMARNAT ban, fine, expulsion. A respectful 2 m distance is mandatory.
  • ❌ Relying 100% on cards: many restaurants & tours accept cash only. ATMs often down or swamped.
  • ❌ Drinking tap water: not drinkable. Bottled water everywhere, but bring your reusable bottle (the island's anti-plastic initiative).
  • ❌ Driving fast in a golf cart: speed limited to 20 km/h, sandy streets, kids everywhere. The slower you go, the more you enjoy it.

How do you get to Holbox from Cancún?

Is there sargassum on Holbox?
Far less than in Tulum/Playa del Carmen. Holbox is on the north coast (Gulf of Mexico), sheltered from the Atlantic currents that bring the sargassum. Some strandings possible May-August, but far less frequent and less severe than on the Caribbean coast.
When can you see the bioluminescence?
June to November, on moonless nights (3 nights before and after the new moon). Check the lunar calendar before booking. Guided kayak outing recommended (~$40/pers), lamps/phones forbidden.
What budget should I plan for?
Holbox has two tiers. Luxury boutique (Casa Las Tortugas, Mukan, Las Nubes): $ $250–$600 per night. Mid-range boutique (Mawimbi, Villas Flamingos): $120–200 USD/night. Meals: $10–20 USD in the pueblo, $25–50 USD in beach restaurants. Whale shark outing: $130–190 USD/pers.
