Masaya — the "Ciudad de las Flores", capital of Nicaraguan folklore, founded in 1524, 30 km south of Managua. The country's cultural heart: the marimba was invented here, folk dances (Toro Huaco, El Güegüense UNESCO-listed 2005), crafts (hammocks, ceramics, leather, embroidery). The Mercado Viejo de Masaya = the largest craft market in Central America, spread through an old stone fort from 1888.
5 km away: the Volcán Masaya — Nicaragua's first National Park (1979), and the only accessible volcano in Central America where glowing lava can be seen from the crater rim. The Santiago crater has held an active lava lake since 1965. Night tour 6-9pm = the signature experience: bus ride up to the lookout, 10 min watching the glowing lava (safety, gas). Nearby: Pueblos Blancos (Catarina, San Juan de Oriente, Diriá, Diriomo, Niquinohomo) — artisan villages, views over Laguna de Apoyo.
Our field advice: 1 night is enough (ideally based in Granada, 30 min away), night volcano + market in the morning. Natural combo: Granada → Masaya volcano + Pueblos Blancos → Granada (doable in a day). If you love folklore, 2 nights are possible with the Toro Huaco festival (Saturday).

The Nicaragua's first National Park (1979) covers 54 km². 5 craters, several trails: Sendero Coyote (45 min, lookout), Sendero Las Pencas (1h30, more complete), Cueva Tzinacanostoc (bat cave). Excellent interpretation center (geology museum, crater models). By day, a different vibe from the night tour. $10 entry, open 9am-5pm.
The largest craft market in Central America, set in an old stone fort from 1888. Hammocks from Nicaragua (the signature craft), ceramics from San Juan de Oriente, leather braiding, embroidery in traditional style, folk masks, marimbas. Bargaining is tolerated (20% off). Thursday evening = free folklore night (dances, marimba).
A circuit of 5 artisan villages 15-30 min from Masaya: Catarina (exceptional lookout over Laguna de Apoyo + Granada), San Juan de Oriente (pre-Columbian ceramics, family workshops open to visitors), Diriá & Diriomo (folklore, healing traditions), Niquinohomo (Sandino's birthplace, museum). Ideal half-day tour by private taxi or car ($25-40).
On a hill overlooking Masaya, a former military fort from 1893, political prison under Somoza (1937-1979) with visitable underground cells ($3 + guide tip). Hard history, but essential to understand modern Nicaragua. 360° panoramic view : volcanoes, lakes, Granada, Managua. Boy scouts run the site. Easy to combine on the road between Masaya and Granada.

Our advice: base yourself in Granada (30 min) or Apoyo Lagoon (15 min) rather than in Masaya town. More charming, more choice. But there are charming options in Masaya for those who want to stay close to the volcano.

Prefer Granada (30 min, more charm, more hotel choice) or Apoyo Lagoon (15 min, swimming) for the night. Masaya town is less charming. The volcano stays 30 min away. Same budget.
Mercado Viejo open 9am-6pm daily. Hammocks and ceramics = best buys. Bargaining tolerated (-20%). Thursday 7pm : free folklore night (marimba, dances). An atmosphere not to be missed.
If daytime is your only option: trails, panoramic lookout, excellent interpretation center. But no visible lava (steam). The night tour remains the signature experience. Combinable day + night $60-70.
Catarina lookout = exceptional view over Laguna de Apoyo + Mombacho + Granada. Restaurants The Lookout or Edén = mandatory sunset macuá. Combinable with a half-day Pueblos Blancos by private taxi ($30-40).
Night volcano tour = active mosquitoes. DEET repellent essential. Long clothing recommended. Bottled water, flashlight, closed shoes (hot ash).
Masaya = the cheapest region of the circuit. 4★ Apoyo hotels $80-150, meals $5-15, craft market $10-50/piece, volcano tours $50. USD accepted everywhere. Traveler's checks refused.
