Copán — nicknamed "The Paris of the Maya world" by archaeologists for the exceptional finesse of his sculptures. Former prosperous Mayan city In the 9th century, capital of a southeastern border kingdom. Registered UNESCO in 1980. Discovered in the modern sense by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1839 (Stephens bought it for 50 dollars to a local farmer).

Specificity Copán is not the most monumental (Tikal, Calakmul plus imposing) but the most artistically refined. Carved high-relief stelae (the most beautiful in the Maya world), Hieroglyphic Stairs (2,200 glyphs, longest known Maya text), Rosalila Temple rebuilt as a replica at the museum, Acropolis with fascinating archaeological digs. Dynasty of 16 sovereigns (from Yax K'uk' Mo', founder, 426 AD to Yax Pasaj, last ruler). The town Copán Ruins = Colonial village 1 km from the site, charming, perfect base. 14 km away: Guatemala border (El Florido) — Classic Tikal-Copán combo.

The site covers 24 hectares. Grand Plaza with its carved stelae in high relief (the most beautiful in the Maya world), Hieroglyphic Stairs (2,200 glyphs, the longest known Mayan text, under protective roofing), Acropolis Royal Palace Complex, Juego de Pelota (ritual playground), Temple 16. A 2-3-hour guided tour is required ($20-30/private guide). Admission: $15. Open 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Bilingual audio guides available.

Next to the site, the Sculpture Museum shelters the original steles (The ones in situ are replicas for preservation). 2 km from the village, Macaw Mountain sanctuary for Scarlet macaws (guara roja, national bird of Honduras) and other birds confiscated from illegal trafficking.
