About Lamanai

The longest-occupied Maya site inCentral America

Deep in the jungle of northern Belize, Lamanai — "submerged crocodile" in Yucatec Maya — holds an absolute record in Central America: 3,000 years of uninterrupted occupation, from the Middle Preclassic (1500 BC) to the resistance against the Spanish in the 17th century. No other Maya site held out that long.

On the western shore of the New River Lagoon, the complex holds more than 700 structures, including three spectacular pyramids: the Mask Temple and its gigantic 4-meter-high limestone mask, the Jaguar Temple with its zoomorphic decorations, and the High Temple rising 33 meters above the canopy. Access is by boat: a 1h30 ride up the New River from Tower Hill bridge, through dense jungle full of crocodiles, bright green iguanas and Jabiru storks.

Our field advice: settle in for 2-3 nights in the Orange Walk area to combine Lamanai, the Bermudian Landing howler monkey sanctuary, Crooked Tree and Altun Ha — a quartet unique to Belize.

Up the New River to Lamanai

A 1h30 boat ride from Tower Hill bridge (Orange Walk) to Lamanai. An experience in itself: Morelet's crocodiles, bright green iguanas perched on trunks, agami herons, the "Jesus Christ" basilisk running on water, spider monkeys in the canopy. The boat slows for every sighting — the ride is almost worth the ruins themselves.

The Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary in Bermudian Landing — a community sanctuary co-managed by 7 riverside Maya villages since 1985. A protected population of Howler monkey, the black howler monkey endemic to the Belize / Guatemala / southern Mexico triangle. Its roar carries 5 km, the loudest land animal call. 2h guided visit, seen from 5-10 m.

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

Belize's first bird reserve, created in 1984. 16,800 acres of lagoons, marshes and flooded forests. Star of the sanctuary: the Jabiru (Jabiru), the largest wading bird in the western hemisphere with a 2 m wingspan and 1.5 m height. More than 200 bird species in total: roseate spoonbills, snail kites, anhingas, kingfishers. Ideal in the dry season when the lagoons shrink.

🏺 Iconic Maya site

Altun Ha · "Rockstone Pond" & jade head

A Classic Maya site (200-900 AD) 1h from Belize City. The name means "Rockstone Pond" in Yucatec. Two main plazas, 13 structures including the Temple of the Masonry Altars, and above all: this is where, in 1968, the Kinich Ahau jade head was discovered — a massive 4.4 kg jade head depicting the Sun god, the largest jade artifact ever found in the Maya region. An ideal combination with Lamanai over 2-3 days.

  • ❌ Visiting Lamanai in 1 day from Belize City: 6h of transport for 2h on site, frustrating — base in Orange Walk 1-2 nights.
  • ❌ Sandals on the ruins: steep stairs, roots, hunter ants. Closed shoes essential.
  • ❌ Crooked Tree in the middle of the green season: expanded lagoons, scattered birds, muddy road. Prefer December-May.
  • ❌ Ignoring cyclone weather: August-October = real hurricane risk, check NOAA before any trip.
  • ❌ Underestimating Heat: 32°C + 85% humidity on the ruins, 2L of water/pers, cap mandatory.

How many nights should I plan for Lamanai & northern Belize?
2-3 nights minimum to combine Lamanai (1 full day, boat round trip), Crooked Tree or Bermudian Landing (1 half-day), Altun Ha (1 half-day). If you sleep at Lamanai Outpost Lodge, plan at least 2 nights to enjoy the night excursions (crocodiles) and morning birdwatching.
Can you reach Lamanai by car?
Technically, a degraded dirt track exists from Indian Church Village, but it is not recommended (4x4 essential, impassable in the green season). The classic access remains the boat from Tower Hill bridge in Orange Walk (1h30 up the New River through the jungle). It's the signature experience, inseparable from the site.
Is it dangerous?
Northern Belize (Orange Walk, Crooked Tree, Bermudian Landing) is very safe, a quiet rural area. Belize City calls for more caution after dark. The Maya sites and lodges are secure. Standard tropical-zone recommendations: no visible jewelry, official taxis, bottled water.
What budget should I plan for?
From $ 180–260 USD/night in a premium eco-lodge (Lamanai Outpost), $ 120–180 USD/night in a mid-range lodge (Banana Bank), $400-600 USD/night in an ultra-remote lodge (Chan Chich). Meals $15-30/pers in a lodge, $5-10 in a local comedor. Lamanai excursion $90-130/pers, often included in the lodge.
When is the best time to go?
The dry season (Dec-May) is ideal: clear skies, contracted lagoons (birds concentrated at Crooked Tree), bearable maximum temperature, few mosquitoes. February-April = the Toucan sweet spot. Avoid August-October = cyclone peak. November = an excellent nature window with post-rain greenery.
