About Ambergris Caye

Belize's largest island, world capital Go snorkeling

Stretched over 40 km long and 1 km wide, Ambergris Caye is Belize's largest island—a long ribbon of white sand, mangroves, and turquoise lagoons set in the Caribbean Sea. Its secret can be summed up in one sentence: the Belize Barrier Reef — second largest coral reef in the world, ranked UNESCO since 1996 — court, only 800 meters from the east coast.

In the south of the island, San Pedro Town — original fishing village on stilts, which became a small, colorful town with wooden houses and sandy streets. It is here that Madonna sang «La Isla Bonita» in 1986, transforming the name of San Pedro into a global myth. Further north, secluded eco-luxe resorts, deserted beaches, and reef passages that make divers worldwide dream.

Our on-site tip: 3 to 5 nights minimum to combine Hol Chan, the Blue Hole, and a lazy beach day. The classic mistake = underestimating boat travel time (2 hours one way to the Blue Hole).

The 5 experiences signature

What we systematically recommend to our travelers in Ambergris Caye. With, under each experience, the on-the-ground secret that makes the difference between a standard stay and a diver's trip.

1 Snorkelers in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Belize
Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

1 km south of Ambergris, the passage Hol Chan (« little channel » in Mayan) cuts through the reef and concentrates spectacular biodiversity: stingrays, turtles, giant groupers, nurse sharks. Belize's first marine reserve created in 1987. A 5-minute boat ride away: Shark Ray Alley — Legendary site where nurse sharks and stingrays, accustomed to former fishermen, swim close to your fins. Snorkeling accessible to all, 2-3 m deep.

Secret Pro: leave at 7 a.m. before the other boats. At 10 a.m., 20 catamarans unload 200 people in the same place. At dawn, we have the passage to ourselves, golden light underwater.
Tip: Half-day combined tour of Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and Mexico Rocks (~$60-75 per person). Half-tank dives available for PADI Open Water certified divers.
2 Aerial view of the Belize Blue Hole, a circle of deep blue in the heart of the reef
Mythic dive

Diving at the Blue Hole in Lighthouse Reef

The ultimate dream of every diver. Perfect crater of 318 m in diameter and 124 m deep, Formerly a collapsed limestone cave at the end of the last ice age. Discovered by Jacques Cousteau in 1971, ranked Top 10 worldwide. Dive to 40m among giant stalactites, Caribbean reef sharks, mysterious halocline. Generally includes: 3 dives (Blue Hole + Half Moon Caye + Long Caye Aquarium).

VIP Option 3–7-night liveaboard (Belize Aggressor, Sundancer II) to dive the Blue Hole, Lighthouse, and Turneffe without the daily 2-hour boat ride. ~$2500–3500/person, 4 dives/day.
Secret Pro: Referral operators from San Pedro Belize Diving Service and Friends of the Sea. Departure at 5:30 a.m., return at 5:00 p.m., ~$320 per person, including lunch. Calm seas are essential; dates are flexible.
3 Snorkeler flying over a coral reef with colorful fish in Belize
Family Snorkel

Mexico Rocks & Tres Cocos — easy reef

10 minutes by boat north of San Pedro, the sites of Mexico Rocks and Three Coconuts are coral gardens at a depth of 2-4 m — perfect for children, confident non-swimmers, or simply a relaxed snorkel. Brain coral, sea fans, red starfish, regular green sea turtles, stingrays resting on the sand. Crystal clear water, no current.

Secret Pro: Ask a guide to collect shells and return them to the water—a magical moment for children, without touching the wildlife.
Tip: Combined with Hol Chan for half a day. Ideal for beginner families before attempting the outer reef.
4 Shallow turquoise waters of Secret Beach on the west coast of Ambergris Caye
Hidden beach

Secret Beach — The Wild West Coast

On the west side of Ambergris (lagoon side, opposite the reef), Secret Beach is a strip of beach where crystal-clear water stays calf-deep for 100 meters. Formerly «secret,» now known, but still sublime: stilted bars, hammocks in the water, postcard-worthy sunsets. 30-45 minutes by golf cart from San Pedro Town via the inland track.

Secret Pro: Go there at 4 PM for the sunset without the tourist crowds (who leave around 3:30 PM). «Pirate's Not So Secret Bar» for sunset cocktails.
Tip: Rough road; rental golf cart required (~$70-90/day). Bring bottled water; there are no ATMs on site; payment must be made in cash (USD or BZD).

Flavors of Belize Caribbean

Belizean cuisine is a unique fusion: Mayan heritage (corn, beans, recados), Afro-Caribbean Creole contributions (coconut milk, plantains), influences from the Garifuna in the south, and Mexican from the north. On Ambergris, people eat fresh fish, grilled lobster, and hot fry jacks — accompanied by the famous Panty Ripper.

Field expertise

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips that guidebooks don't give you. 8 practical tips to save time, money, and frustration in Ambergris Caye—from domestic flights to customs, currency, and choosing a dive operator.

Airplane
Transportation

Take Tropic Air, not the ferry

The domestic flight from BZE to SPR costs ~$80 one way for a 15-minute flight. The water taxi costs ~$25 but requires a 1h30 transfer plus a 1h15 boat ride. With diving gear, it saves a lot of time and offers spectacular views of the reef.

💵
Currency

USD everywhere, BZD useless

The Belize Dollar (BZD) is pegged at 2.1 USD. All stores, hotels, and restaurants accept U.S. dollars at no extra charge. No need to exchange currency. Visa and MasterCard are accepted everywhere; American Express is sometimes declined. U.S. dollars in cash are useful for tips.

🤿
Scuba diving

Blue Hole: not a beginner dive

Depth 40 m, potential for decompression sickness, tight dive group. Recommended minimum level = PADI Advanced Open Water + 25 logged dives. Alternatively, opt for the outer snorkeling tour or stick to Hol Chan.

Alarm clock
Length of stay

3–5 nights minimum

To combine Hol Chan (half-day) + Blue Hole (full day, 5 a.m.–5 p.m.) + Mexico Rocks (half-day) + relaxing on the beach + Secret Beach. Less than 3 nights = a disappointing experience. 1 week = ideal for divers.

🚙
Locomotion

Golf carts are required at Secret Beach

To explore the west coast or the north, golf cart rentals cost ~$70-90 per day (Cholo's, Captain Sharks, Carts Belize). An international driver's license is required. Drive on the right; maximum speed is 25 km/h.

🌀
Season

Avoid September–October

Hurricane season is in full swing, beaches are washed away, the sea is barely visible, and some hotels are closing. If you're traveling during the off-season, aim for June (transition period) or November (end of hurricane season). March–April = absolute perfection.

🦟
Health

Sand flies are the enemy #1

Worse than mosquitoes. Tiny, invisible, cause itching for two weeks. Repellent High in DEET 30%+ Required at dawn and dusk on the beach. Strong wind = no sand flies; see trade winds.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 30 days

Passport valid for 6 months after return. Free entry stamp, valid for 30 days and renewable on site ($25). Departure tax ~$56 USD at the airport (sometimes included in the ticket—check).

To avoid - the classic pitfalls

  • Booking a hotel too far north on your first trip: Total isolation, paid shuttle, frustrations. First stay = San Pedro Town center.
  • Diving in the Blue Hole with no experience: 40 m, tight group, narcosis. PADI Advanced + 25 dives minimum.
  • Hoping to see turtles without a guide Hol Chan yes, but free snorkeling on the beach side = sand, no reef. A boat tour is essential.
  • Traveling in September-October: Hurricane season, rough seas, closed hotels. December-May is the window.
  • Walking alone at night in downtown Belize City: Direct transfers PGIA → SPR airport or water taxi, never linger in Belize City after 6 PM.
  • Forget the repellent: Devastating sand flies at dawn and dusk, holidays ruined by two weeks of itching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 7 questions we're most often asked about Ambergris Caye and San Pedro.

How many nights to plan for in Ambergris Caye?
3 nights minimum to taste the island without frustration. 5 nights if one wants to combine Hol Chan + Blue Hole + Mexico Rocks + beach. 7 nights For certified divers who want to combine Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Atoll, and the Blue Hole. A day trip to Mayan ruins (Lamanai or Altun Ha) can easily be added.
Is the Blue Hole really worth it?
For a certified diver PADI Advanced + 25 dives, Yes—it's a mythical dive, a lifelong dream. For a beginner, no: 2 hours by boat round trip, possible nitrogen narcosis at 40m, you mostly see stalactites and a few reef sharks. It's better to aim for snorkeling at Half Moon Caye Wall on the same boats, or focus on Hol Chan.
Is Ambergris suitable for families?
Excellent family destination. Calm beaches, easy snorkeling at Hol Chan for ages 8 and up, fun golf carts for the kids, hotels with pools (Victoria House, Sunbreeze). For teens: kitesurfing, paddleboarding, clear kayaking. For toddlers, it's best to choose hotels with sandy beaches rather than docks (shallow water in front). English and Spanish spoken.
Is it dangerous in Ambergris or San Pedro?
Ambergris Caye is one of the safest destinations in Belize — The island lives off tourism, strong tourist surveillance, almost no crime for visitors. Belize City On the other hand, focus on the problems: never linger in town, direct transfers PGIA → SPR via Tropic Air flight or ferry. On the island, standard precautions: do not leave bags unattended on the beach.
What budget should I plan for?
From $ 180–260 USD/night in good 4* category (Mata Rocks, Sunbreeze), $400–700 USD/night in luxury (Victoria House, Las Terrazas, Matachica), $1500+ per night in a secluded eco-luxury resort (Cayo Espanto). Restaurant meals: $25–50 per person; local eateries: $8–12. Excursions: Hol Chan $60–75, Blue Hole $320, Lamanai $180. Domestic flight BZE–SPR $80 one-way.
How do I get to San Pedro from Paris?
No direct flights France → Belize. Main routes: Paris → Miami → Belize (American Airlines, approximately 14 hours total), Paris → Houston → Belize (United), Paris → Atlanta → BZE (Delta), or Paris → Cancún → Belize International Airport (combine with Yucatán). Then a 15-minute domestic Tropic Air flight to San Pedro (SPR). Our Toucan Discovery team organizes all transfers to Dynamics.
Is diving certification required to enjoy ambergris?
No. Snorkeling is exceptional and accessible to everyone: Hol Chan is 2–3 m deep, Mexico Rocks is 2 m deep, and Shark Ray Alley is 1 m deep. You’ll see turtles, rays, nurse sharks, and all kinds of reef life without even needing a tank. For divers, the island is a paradise (Esmeralda Cut, Cypress Caverns, Tackle Box, Blue Hole), but diving isn’t a must to enjoy Ambergris.
