The Placencia peninsula is a narrow strip of land 26 km long and 1 km wide at its narrowest, planted in the Caribbean Sea in southern Belize, in the Stann Creek District. Three hubs set the pace of life: Maya Beach in the north, Seine Bight in the middle (Garífuna village), and Placencia Village at the very end — one road, one beach, one lagoon.

A beach awarded several times as "best beach in the Caribbean" by TripAdvisor and Travel + Leisure, direct access to the Belize Barrier Reef System (UNESCO), annual aggregation of whale sharks at Gladden Spit and flats legendary for Permit fishing: Placencia is the ideal base for southern Belize, halfway between the atolls and the Maya Mountains.

From Belize City, the 35 min Tropic Air flight (PLJ) costs ~$185 one way. The road via Hummingbird and Southern Highway takes 4-5h but offers spectacular scenery: fly there, drive back.

The whale sharks at Gladden Spit are only seenaround the full moon between April and June, an 8-10 day window. Check the lunar calendar BEFORE setting your dates and lock in the tour 6 months ahead.

The best guides (Lincoln Westby, Charlie Leslie) are booked 6 to 9 months ahead for the March-June season. For the "grand slam", plan 2-3 consecutive days — the weather dictates the strategy.

Lobster season is open from July 1 to February 28. The Placencia Lobster Fest (last weekend of June) marks the opening: concerts, tastings, a unique atmosphere. Book your hotel 3 months ahead.

No car needed on site. Golf cart rental $50/day or bike $10/day to get between Placencia Village, Seine Bight and Maya Beach. Local taxis for the evening, $5-15 per ride.

  • ❌ Doing Placencia in 1 or 2 nights: 3 to 5 nights minimum to combine beach, snorkel, jungle.
  • ❌ Setting dates without a full moon: for the whale shark, no full moon Apr-June means 0% chance.
  • ❌ Traveling during hurricane season: August-October = peak, real risk. Check NHC weather alerts before departure.
  • ❌ Renting a car on site: totally unnecessary on the peninsula, a golf cart or bike is enough.
  • ❌ Ordering lobster out of season: March-June = strict ban, you'd be served imported frozen lobster.
  • ❌ Underestimating the Caribbean sun: SPF 50, sunglasses, hat. Reef-safe sunscreen mandatory for snorkeling.

When can you see the whale sharks at Gladden Spit?
The window is very precise : 8 to 10 days around each full moon, fromApril to June. It's the spawning of the cubera snappers that attracts the Whale shark. April-May = best visibility. Dive in the afternoon (2-5pm). Booking 6 months ahead is imperative as places are limited in the Marine Reserve — we lock in spots via Toucan Dynamics as soon as the lunar calendar is known.
