About the Blue Hole

The most iconic karst crater is the Caribbean

Imagine a perfectly circular disc of navy blue, encircled by a turquoise ring of coral reef, resting in the middle of a lost atoll 80 km off the coast of Belize. That's the Great Blue Hole — an underwater cenote 124 meters deep and 318 meters in diameter, remnant of a limestone cave that collapsed at the end of the last ice age, about 12,000 years ago, when rising waters submerged this entire karst system.

The commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau led an expedition in 1971 aboard the Calypso to map it and classified it in his famous Top 10 most beautiful dives in the world. Since then, the site has been classified UNESCO in 1996 within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, the second largest coral reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef.

The Blue Hole is part of the atoll of Lighthouse Reef, the only three coral atolls in the Caribbean — the other two being Turneffe Atoll and Glover's Reef, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. A unique geological combination in the Western Hemisphere.

Our on-site tip: the Blue Hole is not a dive for beginners. Advanced level required (depth 40 m). But the experience is more about the emotion than the wildlife—descending into a 12,000-year-old cathedral of stalactites is like diving into a dry cave from the Pleistocene.

The 5 Dives signature

The Blue Hole is the star of the trip, but without its neighbors, the experience remains incomplete. Here is the ideal combo of the three atolls and their major spots, in the order we plan it on Dynamics.

1 Dive inside the Blue Hole, divers along the karst wall with stalactites
Mythic dive

Great Blue Hole — descent to 40m

An underwater archaeology dive more than a wildlife safari. Descend along the vertical wall to 40 meters stalactites and stalagmites—evidence that 12,000 years ago, this cave was open to the air. Fauna: Caribbean reef sharks (Blacktip reef shark), midnight parrotfish, occasionally bull sharks. No seahorses despite the persistent rumor.

🤫 Secret Pro : less visibility in the hole (18-25 m) than around it (25-30 m). It's the dark cave atmosphere that strikes you, not the transparency.
👑 Required Level: Advanced Open Water minimum, ideally Deep Diver. Depth 40 m, mandatory decompression stop on ascent.
2 Half Moon Caye Wall coral reef with multicolored tropical fish
🐠 Vertical wall

Half Moon Caye Wall — one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean

A 10-minute boat ride from the Blue Hole, the wall of Half Moon Caye It drops straight down from a depth of 8 m to over 1,000 m. Giant sponges, purple gorgonians, eagle rays, green sea turtles, and nurse sharks resting beneath the overhangs. Visibility of 25–30 m guaranteed, with vibrant colors. This dive is just as much a highlight of the trip as the Blue Hole itself.

🤫 Secret Pro : do this dive second of the day (after the Blue Hole) — ideal nitrogen stop, midday sun on the wall.
💡 Tip: Keep an eye on the deep blue: eagle rays, occasional hammerheads, hammerhead sharks in April-May.
3 Red-footed booby colony nesting in vegetation on Half Moon Caye, Belize
🐦 Bird Sanctuary

Half Moon Caye Natural Monument

Half Moon Caye islet was designated Belize's first marine reserve in 1982. You land there between dives: 4,000 red-footed boobiesSula sulanestling in the ziricote trees, only breeding colony in the Western Hemisphere. Green iguanas roaming free, hermit crabs, pristine white sand beach. A stilted lookout in the heart of the trees for birdwatching at nest height.

🤫 Secret Pro : April-June = breeding season, juveniles visible. Bring lightweight binoculars + telephoto lens.
👑 Faun bonus: Green sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach between May and October—rangers from the Belize Audubon Society organize nighttime patrols during the season.
4 Shallow coral reef at Long Caye Aquarium with schools of colorful fish
Vibrant reef

Long Caye Aquarium — Relaxing Diving

To end the day with 3 dives, we always choose Long Caye Aquarium vibrant reef, 6 to 18 m depth, shoals of gruntsCottonwick grunt), parrotfish, spotted eels, sometimes seahorses. The name is no exaggeration: the water is so clear and the fish density so high that it feels like swimming in a giant aquarium. Recreational diving, shallow depth, possible to snorkel.

🤫 Secret Pro : ideal for non-divers for snorkeling — the reef begins 1.50 m below the surface.
💡 Tip: Underwater camera: exceptional fish colors and density for underwater photos.
5 Dive live-aboard boat anchored off a coral atoll in Belize
⛵ Live-aboard adventure

4 to 7-Day Diving Cruise - The 3 Atolls

To fully experience it, the ultimate formula is the Live-aboard — a liveaboard dedicated to diving, which spends 4 to 7 nights cruising the three atolls: Lighthouse Reef (Blue Hole + Half Moon), Turneffe Atoll (Elbow, a legendary drift dive), and Glover’s Reef (Long Caye Wall). 3 to 4 dives per day, including one night dive; no wasted time on boat transfers—you sleep between dive sites. The best part: Belize Aggressor IV and Sun Dancer II.

👑 Comfort: 8 to 18 air-conditioned double cabins, onboard kitchen, instructor, Nitrox included as per package. Ideal for diving couples or groups of 6-10 people.
💡 Tip: Departure Saturday, Belize City Marina, return the following Saturday. Budget ~ $2,600 to $3,800 USD/person depending on season and package.

Field expertise

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips that brochures don't give you. 8 on-the-ground shortcuts for a successful Blue Hole dive without disappointment or nasty surprises.

🤿
Level

Advanced Open Water mandatory

The Blue Hole = 40 m depth. Advanced level (PADI or CMAS 2★ equivalent) verified upon boarding. Dive log required. Open Water alone = serious tour operator refusal.

📅
Season

Sweet spot: April to June

Dry season ending, winds dropped, sea is calm. Maximum visibility 25-30 m. Before April: trade winds at 25 knots = frequent cancellations. After June: hurricane risk September-October.

💨
Weather

Always plan for 2 days buffer

Caribbean passages > 20-25 knots = cancellation by serious tour operators. Plan for 2 floating days in the itinerary for rescheduling. Cancellation = standard refund, but a lost day.

🚤
Day trip

Day trip = 13-hour boat trip

Departure San Pedro 5:30 AM, return 7:00 PM. 2-2.5 hours by speedboat each way. Fast boat, bumpy ride, possible seasickness. Scopoderm patch the day before recommended. Light breakfast.

Live-aboard

Comfort changes everything

The premium option = 4-7 night live-aboard. 3-4 dives/day, we sleep on site, no transfers. Belize Aggressor IV or Sun Dancer II = world references. Count ~2600-3800 USD/person.

🦈
Fauna

No prehistoric seahorses

The persistent rumor mentions giant seahorses in the Blue Hole. False. The actual fauna includes: Caribbean reef sharks, sometimes bull sharks, midnight parrotfish, and the real spectacle is the stalactites and cave ambiance.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 30 days

Passport valid 6 months after return. Belize Travel Authorization no longer in effect since 2024. Exit tax $20 USD airport (to be paid in cash). PADI paper logbook or updated PADI app.

🌐
Tour operators

Choose a reputable agency

On a day trip to San Pedro: Amigos del Mar, Belize Diving Adventures, Scuba School Caye Caulker. Avoid the low-cost agencies on Coconut Drive: aging equipment, undertrained instructors.

To avoid - the classic pitfalls

  • Book without weather buffer: One day only = Russian roulette. Plan for a minimum of 2-3 days for the itinerary to fit in diving.
  • Coming as a novice: Open Water isn't enough. Do your Advanced course beforehand in Ambergris or Caye Caulker.
  • Choose a low-cost agency: Poorly maintained equipment, insufficient deep diving safety. Save $50, risk of serious accident.
  • Hurricane season September-October = air pockets, cascading cancellations. Prefer April-June or December window.
  • Tired dive 13 hours by boat + 3 dives = exhausting. Arrive rested, hydrated, with a light stomach.
  • Forgetting your PADI license Tour operators refuse boarding without proof. Photo on phone insufficient: plastic card or official PADI app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions we're asked most often about the Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef.

Can you dive the Blue Hole with an Open Water certification?
No, reputable tour operators require a Advanced Open Water (PADI) or equivalent (CMAS 2★, SSI Advanced). Diving to 40m, a depth reserved for Advanced certification. Logbook verification upon boarding. If you arrive with an Open Water certification, plan for 2 days on Ambergris Caye to complete your Advanced certification (~$350 USD, 4 dives) before the Blue Hole excursion.
How many days to book in Belize for the Blue Hole?
Minimum 5 days on site. Typical itinerary: 2 nights in San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) for acclimatization and warm-up dives + 1 day trip to the Blue Hole + 1-2 buffer days for weather and rest/recovery. Ideal: 7-10 days to combine Caye Caulker, Ambergris, Blue Hole, and a bit of the mainland (Caracol, Hopkins). On a liveaboard: 5-8 days.
Are there really sharks in the Blue Hole?
Yes, we regularly see some Caribbean reef sharks (Blacktip reef shark), often in groups of 4-8 individuals patrolling along the walls. Occasionally bull sharks or hammerhead sharks during peak season. These species are non-aggressive towards respectful divers; instructor supervision is essential. This is one of the site's great thrills.
How to get to the Blue Hole from France?
Flights Paris → Belize City (BZE) via Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Newark, or Cancun. No direct flight from France to Belize. Allow for a total travel time of 12-16 hours. Upon arrival: transfer to San Pedro via domestic Tropic Air flight (15 minutes, 100 USD) or by fast boat (1 hour 30 minutes, 35 USD). For live-aboard: departure from Belize City marina on Saturday. Our Toucan team will build the complete itinerary. Dynamics.
What budget should I plan for diving the Blue Hole?
Day trip 3 dives from San Pedro $280-$340 USD/person (includes transport, 3 dives at Blue Hole + Half Moon Wall + Long Caye Aquarium, lunch, and marine park fees of $40 USD). 7-night liveaboard : 2,600-3,800 USD/person based on season and package (cabin, meals, 18-22 dives, nitrox). Ambergris Caye 4-star hotel: 180-280 USD/night. Total 8-day diving trip budget: 2,500-5,000 USD/person excluding international flights.
Is the Blue Hole really worth the trip?
Honest answer from divers: yes for the symbol, the emotion, and the photo. It's one of the most iconic dives in the world, the feeling of plunging into a 12,000-year-old submerged cave is unique. But Not if you are looking for dense wildlife visibility in the hole is lesser, wildlife limited to a few reef sharks. The ideal combo = Blue Hole + Half Moon Wall + Long Caye Aquarium on the same day, which turns a signature dive into a memorable day.
