About the Blue Hole

The most emblematic karst crater in the Caribbean

Imagine a perfectly circular disc of navy blue, encircled by a turquoise ring of coral reef, sitting in the middle of a lost atoll 80 km off the coast of Belize. This is the Great Blue Hole - an underwater cenote 124 meters deep and 318 meters in diameter, the remains of a limestone cave that collapsed at the end of the last ice age, some 12,000 years ago, when rising waters engulfed the entire karst system.

The commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau led a mapping expedition there in 1971 aboard the Calypso and included it in his famous world's top 10 most beautiful dives. Since then, the site has been classified UNESCO in 1996 within the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, the second largest barrier reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef.

The Blue Hole is part of the Lighthouse Reef, one of only three coral atolls in the Caribbean - the other two being Turneffe Atoll and Glover's Reef, also a UNESCO site. A geological combo unique in the Western Hemisphere.

Our field tip: the Blue Hole is not a beginner's dive. Advanced level required (depth 40 m). But the experience is much more about the emotion than the fauna - descending into a 12,000-year-old cathedral of stalactites is like diving into a dry Pleistocene cave.

The 5 dives signature

The Blue Hole is the star of the trip, but without its neighbors, the experience remains incomplete. Here's the ideal combo of the three atolls and their major spots, in the order we program it on Dynamics.

1 Diving inside the Blue Hole, divers follow the karst wall with stalactites.
🤿 Mythical diving

Great Blue Hole - descent to 40 m

An underwater archaeology dive rather than a wildlife safari. Descent along the vertical wall to 40 m where stalactites and stalagmites appear - proof that 12,000 years ago, this cave was in the open air. Fauna: Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi), midnight parrotfish, occasional bull sharks. No sea horses despite persistent rumors.

🤫 Secret Pro : Less visibility in the hole (18-25 m) than around it (25-30 m). It's the dark cave atmosphere that strikes you, not the transparency.
👑 Level required: Advanced Open Water minimum, ideally Deep Diver. Depth 40 m, decompression stop mandatory on ascent.
2 Half Moon Caye Wall with multicolored tropical fish
🐠 Vertical wall

Half Moon Caye Wall - one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean

A 10-minute boat ride from the Blue Hole, the wall of Half Moon Caye drops steeply from a depth of 8 m to over 1000 m. Giant sponges, purple gorgonians, eagle rays, green turtles, nurse sharks resting under ledges. Visibility 25-30 m guaranteed, explosive colors. It's the diving that justifies the trip as much as the Blue Hole itself.

🤫 Secret Pro : do this dive second of the day (after the Blue Hole) - ideal nitrogen stop, midday light on the wall.
💡 Tip: keep an eye on the blue of the open sea: eagle rays, occasional hammerheads, hammerhead sharks in April-May.
3 Colony of red-legged boobies nesting in the vegetation of Half Moon Caye, Belize
🐦 Bird sanctuary

Half Moon Caye Natural Monument

The islet Half Moon Caye was classified Belize's first marine reserve in 1982. In between dives, 4,000 red-legged boobies (Sula sula) nesting in ziricotes, the only breeding colony in the Western Hemisphere. Free-roaming green iguanas, hermit crabs, pristine white sand beach. Birdwatching from a stilt tower in the heart of the trees.

🤫 Secret Pro : April-June = breeding season, juveniles visible. Bring lightweight binoculars + telephoto lens.
👑 Bonus wildlife : green turtles lay their eggs on the beach between May and October - the Belize Audubon Society organizes night watches in season.
4 Long Caye Aquarium shallow coral reef with schools of multicolored fish
🐟 Bright reef

Long Caye Aquarium - relaxing diving

To complete a day of 3 dives, we always choose Long Caye Aquarium bright reef, 6 to 18 m deep, schools of gorettes (Haemulon flavolineatum), parrotfish, spotted eels and the occasional seahorse. The name is not misleading: the water is so transparent and the density of fish so high that you have the impression of swimming in a giant aquarium. Pleasure diving, shallow, flippers on the surface possible.

🤫 Secret Pro : ideal for snorkeling - the reef starts 1.50 m below the surface.
💡 Tip: take away waterproof camera: exceptional color and fish density for underwater photos.
5 Live-aboard dive boat anchored off a coral atoll in Belize
⛵ Live-aboard adventure

Diving cruise 4 to 7 days - the 3 atolls

To get the full experience, the best formula is the live-aboard - a dive-dedicated hotel-boat that sails the three atolls for 4 to 7 nights: Lighthouse Reef (Blue Hole + Half Moon), Turneffe Atoll (Elbow, mythical drift dive) and Glover's Reef (Long Caye Wall). 3 to 4 dives a day, including one at night, no lost boat transfers, we sleep between two sites. The cream: Belize Aggressor IV and Sun Dancer II.

👑 Comfort: 8 to 18 air-conditioned double cabins, galley on board, instructor, nitrox included depending on formula. Ideal for diving couples or groups of 6-10.
💡 Tip: departure Saturday from Belize City marina, return the following Saturday. Price ~2,600 to 3,800 USD/person depending on season and formula.

Expertise in the field

Tips Experts Toucan

The real advice that brochures don't give. 8 shortcuts to successful Blue Hole diving without disappointment or unpleasant surprises.

🤿
Level

Advanced Open Water compulsory

The Blue Hole = 40 m depth. Advanced level (PADI or CMAS 2★ equivalent) verified on boarding. Logbook required. Open Water only = serious tour ops refused.

📅
Season

Sweet spot: April to June

Late dry season, winds dropped, flat sea. Maximum visibility 25-30 m. Before April: 25-knot trade winds = frequent cancellations. After June: risk of hurricanes September-October.

💨
Weather

Always allow 2 buffer days

Caribbean winds > 20-25 knots = tour cancelled by serious tour ops. Allow 2 floating days in the itinerary to reschedule. Cancellation = standard refund, but day lost.

🚤
Day trip

Day-trip = 13h boat trip

Depart San Pedro 5.30am, return 7pm. 2h-2h30 speedboat outward, ditto return. Fast boat, jolts, seasickness possible. Scopoderm patch the day before recommended. Light breakfast.

Live-aboard

Comfort makes all the difference

The premium option = live-aboard 4-7 nights. 3-4 dives/day, sleeping on site, no transfers. Belize Aggressor IV or Sun Dancer II = worldwide references. Count ~2600-3800 USD/pers.

🦈
Fauna

No prehistoric sea horses

There's a persistent rumour about giant seahorses in the Blue Hole. False. The real fauna: Caribbean reef sharks, sometimes bull sharks, midnight parrotfish, and the real show = stalactites + cave atmosphere.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 30 days

Passport valid 6 months after return. Belize Travel Authorization no longer in effect since 2024. Airport exit tax 20 USD (to be paid in cash). Up-to-date PADI logbook or PADI app.

🌐
Tour ops

Choose a serious agency

On day trip San Pedro: Amigos del Mar, Belize Diving Adventures, Scuba School Caye Caulker. Avoid the low-cost agencies on Coconut Drive: aging equipment, under-trained instructors.

Avoid the classic pitfalls

  • Book without weather buffer: 1 day = Russian roulette. Allow at least 2-3 days on the itinerary to plan the dive.
  • Coming as a novice: Open Water is not enough. Do your Advanced upstream at Ambergris or Caye Caulker.
  • Choose low-cost agency: poorly maintained equipment, insufficient deep dive safety. Save 50 USD, risk of serious accident.
  • Hurricane season : September-October = air gaps, cascade of cancellations. Prefer April-June or December window.
  • Tired diving : 13h boat trip + 3 dives = exhausting. Arrive rested, hydrated and on a light stomach.
  • Forget your PADI license: tour ops refuse boarding without proof. Photo in phone insufficient: plastic card or official PADI app.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef.

Can you dive the Blue Hole with an Open Water?
No, serious tour operators require a Advanced Open Water (PADI) or equivalent (CMAS 2★, SSI Advanced). The dive descends to 40 m, a depth reserved by certification for the Advanced level. Check logbook on boarding. If you arrive with an Open Water certification, allow 2 days on Ambergris Caye to validate your Advanced (~350 USD, 4 dives) before the Blue Hole outing.
How many days should I reserve in Belize for the Blue Hole?
Minimum 5 days on site. Typical pattern: 2 nights in San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) for acclimatization and warm-up dives + 1 day Blue Hole day-trip + 1-2 days weather buffer + rest / recovery. Ideal: 7-10 days to combine Caye Caulker, Ambergris, Blue Hole and a little of the continent (Caracol, Hopkins). Live-aboard: 5-8 days.
Are there really sharks in the Blue Hole?
Yes, we regularly come across Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus perezi), often in groups of 4-8 on patrol along the walls. Occasional bull sharks or hammerheads in high season. These species are non-aggressive towards respectful divers, but instructor supervision is essential. This is one of the great thrills of the site.
How do I get to the Blue Hole from France?
Flights Paris → Belize City (BZE) via Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Newark or Cancún. No direct flights from France to Belize. Allow 12-16 hours total travel time. On arrival: transfer to San Pedro by Tropic Air domestic flight (15 min, 100 USD) or by speedboat (1h30, 35 USD). For live-aboard: departure from Belize City marina on Saturday. Our Toucan team builds the complete itinerary on Dynamics.
What's the budget for diving the Blue Hole?
Day-trip 3 dives from San Pedro 280-340 USD/person (transport, 3 dives Blue Hole + Half Moon Wall + Long Caye Aquarium, lunch, 40 USD marine park taxes included). Live-aboard 7 nights USD 2,600-3,800/person depending on season and package (cabin, meals, 18-22 dives, nitrox). Ambergris Caye 4★ hotel: 180-280 USD/night. Total budget for 8-day diving trip: 2,500-5,000 USD/person excluding international flights.
Is the Blue Hole really worth the detour?
Honest answer from divers: yes for the symbol, the emotion and the photo. One of the most iconic descents in the world, the feeling of plunging into a 12,000-year-old sunken cave is unique. But not if you're looking for dense wildlife Blue Hole: visibility in the hole is reduced, and the fauna limited to a few reef sharks. The ideal combo = Blue Hole + Half Moon Wall + Long Caye Aquarium on the same day, turning a signature dive into a memorable day.
