In inland Belize, between the Maya Mountains and the dense jungle of the Stann Creek and Cayo districts, two legendary sites tell the same story: that of an almost untouched wilderness and a Maya civilization still plain to see. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the the world's first reserve entirely dedicated to the jaguar, created in 1990 thanks to biologist Alan Rabinowitz and co-managed by the Belize Audubon Society. 128,000 acres (518 km²) of rainforest, the highest jaguar density in Central America.

A few hours' drive further northwest, in the Cayo jungle, ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal — « Cave of the Stone Sepulchre ») was ranked by National Geographic in the world's top 10 underground sites. Inside, 14 Maya skeletons left in place since the 8th century, including the Crystal Maiden — a fully calcified skeleton — bear witness to sacrificial rituals to Chac, god of rain, during the Classic collapse.

A very demanding 3 to 4-day trek through virgin jungle, rarely visited, Forestry Department permit mandatory and certified guide essential. Reserved for seasoned hikers: 1,124 m of elevation from almost sea level, machetes needed outside the dry season.

To organize the combo well, two different logistical bases: the Stann Creek side (Cockscomb) and the Cayo side (ATM). Linking them over 2-3 nights is one of the most beautiful itineraries in inland Belize.

Cockscomb has the highest jaguar density in Central America. You rarely see the cat itself (very nocturnal) — but birds, tapirs, sloths and invertebrates all show up. With a bit of luck and a good local guide, tracks and growls will more than make up for a direct sighting.

Access is restricted to a closed list of tour operators approved by the Institute of Archaeology (Pacz Tours, MayaWalk, Carlos Panti...). No independent visits. Book through your hotel or via Toucan.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • ❌ Doing ATM as a round trip from Belize City: a 12-hour day, exhausting. Sleep in the Cayo the night before at minimum.
  • ❌ Insisting on seeing the jaguar at all costs: guaranteed frustration. Redirect the traveler toward the jungle experience / tracks / secondary wildlife.
  • ❌ Attempting ATM if you can't swim: 3 hours in water, sections swum by headlamp. Intermediate level required.
  • ❌ Booking ATM in Sept-Oct without a plan B: frequent closures due to flooding.
  • ❌ Walking Cockscomb alone at dusk: dense jungle, easy to lose your bearings. Always go with a guide.
  • ❌ Photographing Mopan Maya children without asking: a tradition of respect — always ask in the village.

How many nights should I plan for Cockscomb + ATM?
2 to 3 nights at minimum to do the combo properly. Ideal: 1 night in Hopkins (Cockscomb the next morning) + 1 to 2 nights in the Cayo (San Ignacio or Mountain Pine Ridge) for ATM. Alternative: 2 nights at Sleeping Giant Lodge on the Hummingbird Highway, halfway between the two. We can build the full itinerary on Toucan Dynamics.
Will I really see a jaguar at Cockscomb?
Quite frankly: no, in 99% of cases. The jaguar is nocturnal, solitary and extremely stealthy. That said, Cockscomb has the highest density in Central America (15-20,000 individuals across Belize), so fresh tracks, claw marks on trees, droppings and calls are frequent. With a good guide, indirect observation is fascinating. Tapirs, sloths, howler monkeys and toucans are also regularly seen.
Is ATM Cave accessible to non-athletes?
Level intermediate level required. 7 hours total, including 1 hour of jungle hiking (3 river crossings), 3 hours in the cave with swimming sections, tight spaces, 22°C water. You must know how to swim, not be claustrophobic, and be in good shape. Not suitable for children < 12 years, nor for people with reduced mobility. Accessible plan B: Río Frío Cave (Mountain Pine Ridge), gigantic, on foot, no difficulty.
Is Cockscomb / ATM dangerous?
Both sites are very safe on guided visits. Cockscomb is strictly co-managed by the Belize Audubon Society and Maya Center village, with never a jaguar-human incident. ATM is operated exclusively by tour operators certified by the Institute of Archaeology. Belize overall is safer than the Central American average for travelers. Standard precautions: no wandering off at night, no flashy valuables, filtered water.
Why no cameras in ATM?
In 2012, a tourist dropped his camera on a Maya skull, fracturing it. Since then, all photo equipment (phone, GoPro, camera) is strictly forbidden. It's a conservation decision: the cave holds 14 skeletons in situ, 1,100 years old, perfectly preserved by their isolation. The experience becomes pure and intense, with no screen between you and the past.
How do you get to Cockscomb and ATM from Belize City?
Cockscomb: 2h30 via the Southern Highway, entrance at Maya Center. Private transfer or shuttle. ATM Cave: 2h via the Western Highway to San Ignacio, then 45 min by 4×4 to the Pang Center.
