« How much does a Costa Rica trip cost? ” It's one of the first questions I get, and the honest answer is: more than people think. Costa Rica isn't a low-cost destination — every park, every activity costs money — but it's also a country where you get your money's worth. Here is, line by line and with real 2026 figures, how to build your Costa Rica travel budget.
How much does a Costa Rica trip cost? Overview
Here's a realistic estimate for 15 days, per person, international flight included, based on two people traveling together (car and room are shared).
| Line item | Backpacker | Comfort | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round-trip flight Paris–San José | 700 € | 900 € | 1 100 € |
| Car (12 days, shared) | 350 € | 420 € | 550 € |
| Accommodation (13 nights) | 400 € | 900 € | 1 800 € |
| Parks + activities | 200 € | 350 € | 550 € |
| Meals (15 days) | 300 € | 450 € | 700 € |
| Gas, transfers, misc. | 150 € | 200 € | 300 € |
| Total / person | ≈ €2,100 | ≈ €3,200 | ≈ €5,000 |
For two, over two weeks, the total bill therefore runs roughly from 4 000 € (economical) to 10 000 € and up (premium). Let's see where these figures come from.

The details, line by line
Flights
It's the biggest line item. A round-trip Paris–San José ranges between €600 and €1,300 depending on the season and how early you book, with a direct flight around €1,000. Booking 4 to 6 months ahead and avoiding school holidays quickly saves €200 to €300.
Car rental
Allow about €70 per day, basic insurance included, for a suitable vehicle (an SUV/4×4 is comfortable for the back roads). Watch out for the classic trap: the “from €15” rates shown online don't include the mandatory local insurance. Over a stay, the car is often the 2nd biggest expense after the flight — but shared between two, it stays reasonable. For details on vehicle choice, see our page which vehicle to rent and our complete guide to car rental in Costa Rica.
Accommodation
It's the most elastic line item. Allow about €30 per person per night in a simple hotel (3*), 70 € in a nice 4* hotel, and €120 and up in a lodge or boutique hotel. In the green season, these rates drop by 20 to 40%.
National parks and activities
In Costa Rica, everything costs money : each national park costs on average $12 to $18 per adult (Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero, Corcovado…), and children often pay a reduced rate. Add the activities (hanging bridges, boat outing in Tortuguero, zipline, naturalist guide): allow €200 to €550 per person over the stay depending on your program.
Meals
Good news: eating isn't expensive if you stay local. A married (the daily special) at a soda comes to under €7. Allow €25 to €35 per day per person mixing sodas and restaurants; more in the very touristy areas.
What daily budget?
Excluding the flight, plan on average €140 to €170 per day for two in the comfort version (car + hotel + parks + meals). It's the right benchmark to quickly estimate a stay, whatever its length.
