The Rincón de la Vieja National Park protects an active volcano (1,916 m) with spectacular geothermal activity: fumaroles, bubbling mud pots, geysers, hot springs. Las Pailas Trails (2h, easy, see geothermal activity) and La Cangreja (5h, strenuous, waterfall). Therapeutic mud baths at Hacienda Guachipelín. 1 hour from Liberia.
One of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica: Conchal Beach gets its name from its sand largely composed of Crushed seashells (Millions of white fragments instead of black sand). Calm turquoise waters, snorkeling, not crowded due to limited access (on foot from Brasilito 20 min, or via the Westin hotel). No vendors, no noise. A postcard beach.
The Palo Verde National Park and the Río Tempisque estuary are a bird paradise (300+ species): Jabirus, white ibises, herons, these large wading birds of Central America. American crocodiles on the banks (up to 4 m). 2-hour silent boat trip, morning departure for the ideal tide. Perfect combination with a beach day.
Guanacaste is the Land of the cowboys (cowboy co-stars). Several traditional ranches open their doors: Hacienda Guachipelín (1880, cattle drive + adventure tours), Buena Vista del Rincon, Horizons Ranch. Rodeo, ranch life, typical sabanero fare (gallo pinto + carne asada + homemade tortilla), horseback riding on volcano trails.
The Las Baulas Marine National Park protect Big Beach, one of the last great nesting sites of the Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea - up to 2m, 700kg!). Season October to February, December picture. Strictly controlled night outing (certified guides, red lights, small groups). Intense emotion to see this giant lay eggs. 30 minutes from Tamarindo by boat or car.
The Guanacaste is divided between the Signature beaches (West Pacific), the Volcanoes and National Parks (inland) and the Ranchs sabaneros (Campaign). Choose a base and explore in a star pattern.

The Guanacaste is home to the only dry tropical forest from Central America, a rare ecosystem combining savanna and seasonal jungle. Signature fauna: Leatherback turtle Playa Grande, American Crocodiles, Jabiru Storks, and 6 species of sea turtles on the coast.

Liberia LIR = Northern Pacific Airport. Direct flights to Houston, Miami, NYC, LA. Madrid via Iberia. Allow 30-60 minutes for transfers to beaches depending on the area (Papagayo 30 min, Tamarindo 1h, Sámara 2h).
Volcano visible in the morning before the clouds descend. Las Pailas trail (2h, geothermal) is family-friendly. Cangreja (5h, strenuous, waterfall) is for experienced hikers. Book entrance in advance during high season.
Leatherback Turtle Nesting Season: October to February, peak December-January. Night excursions with certified guide, red lights, groups of 8 maximum. Book at Hotel Las Tortugas or via DMC. Magical and moving.
Conchal = most beautiful, snorkeling, limited access. Hermosa = premium calm, high-end hotels. Tamarindo = festive, surfing, nightlife. Choose according to profile: premium family → Conchal, chic couple → Hermosa, young people/surfing → Tamarindo.
Hacienda Guachipelín or Buena Vista del Rincón: a day combining horseback riding, ziplining, mud baths, and a traditional meal. ~$120-180/person. Authentic sabanera culture + adventure activities. Ideal as a complement to a beach vacation.
Strong winds (up to 50 km/h) on the Papagayo Peninsula and in Bahía Salinas during the dry season. Great for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Salinas. However, strong winds may interfere with swimming and boating on windy days. Check the forecast before going on a boat trip.
Guanacaste = the hottest region (up to 35°C in the afternoon during the dry season). Hydrate, use sunscreen, wear a hat, take air-conditioned breaks from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The green season is milder (28-30°C with showers).
A passport valid for at least one day after the return date is sufficient. No visa is required for European citizens. An entry card must be filled out upon arrival at LIR or SJO.
