The end of the world North

Boca Tapada — remote village of the northern border with Nicaragua, on the banks of the Río San Carlos. Area of Primary rainforest, sanctuary of the'ara vert grand (Great Green Macaw, endangered species — 200 breeding pairs in Costa Rica). Remote, without mass tourism.

Some ecolodges only (Maquenque, Laguna del Lagarto), lost in the jungle. Activities: San Carlos River Fluvial Safari, Bird watching (breeding season December-May), boat tours, jungle hiking, night wildlife observation. True disconnection. 4-hour drive from SJO via Aguas Zarcas.

Boca Tapada is home to the largest population of green macaws Costa Rica (200+ breeding pairs). The Maquenque Ecolodge is a pioneer in their conservation. Whether observed from private observation towers or directly from the lodge, macaws come to feed on the beach almond trees from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This CITES-listed species is endangered. A guided nature tour is recommended.

The cuisine of the northern zone of Costa Rica is Simple, peasant, jungle. Nicaraguan influences (border), gallo pinto as a base, river fish (tilapia, guapote), plantains, yuca, fresh cheese. Family sodas and restaurant lodges are the staples.

Mandatory 4x4 for green season

The last 20 km are on a gravel road. A 4x4 is required from May through November (due to mud). During the dry season (Jan–Apr), a standard car is fine. The drive from SJO to Boca Tapada takes 4 hours. A GPS is essential.
