Our on-the-ground advice (DMC has been on site since 2018): Ideally, spend 3–4 nights in Santa Teresa—1 day for a surf lesson, 1 day visiting the Montezuma waterfalls, and 1 day relaxing. Difficult access (5 hours from SJO + ferry). The Sansa flight from SJO to TMU (1 hour, $130) is recommended.

Santa Teresa Bohemian surf spot, globally recognized. Consistent waves 365 days/year, intermediate+ level ideal. Green season (May-Nov) = larger waves. Dry season (Dec-Apr) = Milder waves (beginners). Schools: Costa Rica Surf Camp, Del Soul Surf School, Pranamar. Course $50-70/2h.
5 km long white sand beach lined with palm trees and wooden huts. Iconic sunset Daily meeting point for travelers (5:45 PM-6 PM depending on season). Morning beach yoga on the beach. Rustic beach bars (Le Bistrot, Pranamar Beach Bar) for cocktails. Beach is very sparsely built on the beach side = preserved atmosphere.
30 minutes south, the Magic Town Montezuma houses its famous waterfalls 3 successive levels In the jungle, swimming allowed, hippie chic ambiance, 30-min trail. Combine with Cabo Blanco Reserve (national park, trails, deserted beaches). Top half-day road trip.
Bad Country 5 minutes north = former fishing village, now quieter than Santa Teresa. Restaurants with feet in the sand, quieter beaches, intermediate surfing. Cabuya 20 minutes south = a more authentic village with its "island of the dead" (cemetery on an island connected at low tide).
25 minutes south, White Cape = First nature reserve of Costa Rica (1963). Tropical dry forest, trails to deserted beaches (Playa Cabo Blanco, Playa Balsita), accessible wildlife: capuchin monkeys, sloths, frigatebirds. 4 km round trip trail (3h), moderate difficulty. Ideal for a half-day nature excursion.

Santa Teresa = international scene = higher prices. Restaurants: $25–45 per person; boutique hotels: $300+. Local bars and hostels for those on a tighter budget.
