The jungle of the northern plains

Sarapiquí — region of the northern plains of Costa Rica, 3h from SJO. Primary tropical rainforest dense, easily accessible (vs isolated Corcovado). Known for Río Sarapiquí rafting (class II-IV rapids), wildlife watching (toucans, sloths, scarlet macaws), nature lodges on the riverbank.

The experience is multi-rhythms : Río Sarapiquí rafting (3h, class III, accessible to families with kids 12+), water safari by silent boat, tirimbina rainforest (suspended trail, wildlife watching), chocolate tour, birdwatching at La Selva (300+ species). Premium lodges (Selva Verde, Sarapiquís Rainforest Lodge).

Our field tip (DMC on site since 2018): 2 nights ideal in Sarapiquí — 1 day rafting + safari, 1 day Tirimbina + chocolate. Star combination: SJO → Sarapiquí → Tortuguero (northern Caribbean continuity) or → Arenal.
