About Guanajuato

The most colorful city from Mexico

Guanajuato — capital of the state of the same name in the region of Bajío (central Mexico). Founded in 1548 on one of the world's richest silver veins, it became one of the most prosperous cities in the Americas by the 18th century. Today UNESCO World Heritage Site Since 1988, it has been the archetype of the Spanish colonial city — pastel yellow, pink, blue, and green facades against a backdrop of bowl-shaped hills.

Built on the side of a canyon, Guanajuato is crossed by 250 alleys (winding alleys) and underground tunnels that channel traffic. Capital of International Cervantino Festival every October — one of Latin America's largest cultural festivals. Birthplace of the Mexican Revolution (1810), homeland of Diego Rivera.

Our on-site tip: a minimum of 3 nights in Guanajuato + 1 day in San Miguel de Allende (1h east). And climb to the Pípila at sunset for the mythical panorama of the city.

Plaza Jardín de la Unión & Juárez Theater

The beating heart of Guanajuato: the Union Garden Square with its 19th-century bandstand surrounded by outdoor cafés, and the Juarez Theater (1903), neoclassical-Art Nouveau masterpiece. Nearby: Collegiate Basilica, University of Guanajuato (monumental staircase), Plazuela San Roque.

🤫 Secret Pro : Visit Teatro Juárez at 5 p.m. (guided tour), gilded salons with a constellation-studded ceiling, royal Italian foyer.

2 Panoramic view of Guanajuato from El Pípila
🌅 Legendary Panorama

Pípila Monument & panoramic view

28 m statue of the hero Juan José de los Reyes Martínez (El Pípila), an emblematic figure of Mexican independence. But above all— the panoramic view Guanajuato: Pastel houses clinging to hills, a canyon, a yellow cathedral. The city's signature photo.

🤫 Secret Pro : to climb funicular ($2 AR, 2 min) rather than taking the stairs (a 15-minute steep climb).
💡 Tip: to go there at 6 p.m. for The sunset — rooftops ablaze in golden light, an unforgettable experience.
3 Colorful houses and alleys of Guanajuato
Alleys

Callejon del Beso & colorful alleys

The 250 alleys are the soul of Guanajuato. The most famous: Alley of the Kiss — 1.68 m wide, a tragic romantic legend of opposite balconies. Also: Callejón del Indio Triste, Callejón de los Tres Cabos. Street revelry = Group musical guided tours with estudiantinas (8:00 p.m., $7).

💡 Tip: Rent a room in a colonial house rather than a chain hotel — living in the side streets is the experience.
🤫 Secret Pro : join a street party Thursday evening (from Plaza San Diego) - 1.5 hour musical stroll + tequila.
4 Mercado Hidalgo, Guanajuato
Tacos & Food Market

Hidalgo Market & Gastronomy

Covered market, 19th century, metal structure inspired by the Eiffel Tower (Gustave Eiffel contributed to it). Inside: Miner's enchiladas, Strawberries with cream, shaved ice, crafts. Also taste the Beef patties (meat patties) and the caramel from Celaya (goat's milk dulce de leche).

5 Baroque Church of San Miguel de Allende

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Guanajuato.

How many nights should I plan for in Guanajuato?
3 nights minimum to enjoy the city (Downtown, alleys, gastronomy, Pípila at sunset) + 1 day San Miguel de Allende. 5-6 nights if you want to add Dolores Hidalgo, Mineral de Pozos, Atotonilco, and the Querétaro wine route.
How to get there from Europe?
Direct flight Paris → Mexico City (10-12h) then 2 options: (1) Bus ETN/Primera Plus Mexico City North → Guanajuato: 5 hours, ~1 hour 40 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes, luxury bus. (2) Domestic flight Mexico → Bajío Airport (BJX, in León), 1 hour, then a 30-minute transfer. Solution 1 = more economical and simpler.
Guanajuato vs. Oaxaca
Both are UNESCO colonial gems but very different. Guanajuato Central Bajío, colonial canyon city, Cervantino Festival, more Europeanized. Oaxaca = Southern Mexico, complex gastronomy, indigenous communities, mezcal. If you have 2 weeks: do both + Mexico City.
When is the best time to go?
Sweet spot October to May (sunny, mild, blue sky). To avoid: June-September (tropical afternoon rains). For the Cervantino Last 3 weeks of October (book 6 months in advance). March-May = perfect climate + few people.
Is Guanajuato safe?
Yes, very sure in the Historic Center. Police presence, walking around at night is OK, very touristy city. The state of Guanajuato as a whole has seen an increase in violence (cartels) but the city itself remains protected. Standard urban area caution.
What budget should I plan for?
Luxury boutique (Villa María Cristina, 1850): $ 200–400 USD/night. Mid-range (Edelmira, Casa del Rector): $90–160 USD/night. Local charm (Antiguo Vapor): $40–80 USD/night. Meals: $5–10 USD at the market, $15–30 USD at a restaurant in the city center, $40–60 USD at a fine-dining restaurant.
