About Puerto Escondido

Mexico City surfing

Puerto Escondido—formerly a hidden fishing port, now a world surf legend. Its waves of Zicatela, nicknamed the « Mexican Pipeline »... , are among the 5 largest in the world. Black volcanic sand, hippie-bohemian lifestyle, seafood gastronomy, and 365 days a year of good vibes.

Beyond surfing, the Oaxacan coast offers 6 distinct beaches (from the calm bay of Carrizalillo to the breaking waves of Zicatela), a Bioluminescent lagoon unique in the world (Manialtepec), and the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle Sanctuary d'Escobilla. The gateway to the entire southern Pacific coast of Mexico.

Our on-site tip: 4 nights minimum in Puerto. Even if you don't surf, swimming at Carrizalillo and the sunset at La Punta are well worth the trip.

Tips Experts Toucan

Real tips that guides don't give you. 8 on-the-ground shortcuts to save time, money, and frustration.

🌊
Surf

Zicatela = expert surfers only

Waves 4-6 m, deep bottom, currents. Beginners: go to La Punta (longboard) or Carrizalillo (foam). Several drownings each season at Zicatela.

Airplane
Access

Direct flight Mexico → PXM

Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM): direct flights to Mexico City in 1 hour, several per day. Much faster than the 8-hour bus from Oaxaca City.

🌅
Local life

Sunset at La Punta at 6 PM

A daily hangout for surfers and travelers. A mojito at Coco Loco or a beer at Espadín. Puerto’s iconic moment.

🐢
Turtles

Brush: with NGO guide

NEVER go alone or with an uncertified guide. NGO Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga = the benchmark. No lights allowed, maintain a respectful distance.

Bioluminescence

Laguna Manialtepec: moonless night

Visible June → December, peak intensity in November. Check the lunar calendar before booking. Guided kayak tour 9 PM - 11 PM.

Beach
Beaches

Carrizalillo for families

Very protected, crystal clear water, gentle waves. Perfect for children to swim. Zicatela too dangerous for them. Bacocho: long, deserted beach.

💵
Cash

Cash-heavy

Many restaurants and tours only accept cash. There are few ATMs in La Punta. Withdraw pesos at the airport or in the city center before heading up to La Punta.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid for 6 months after return. FMM card (~$30) issued upon arrival; must be kept for the duration of the stay.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Trying Zicatela with no experience: Several drownings each season. Beginners: go to La Punta or Carrizalillo, never Zicatela.
  • Turtle output with uncertified operator: illegal, disturbs the turtles. Always with NGO (Mexican Center for the Turtle).
  • Use your credit card everywhere: Many restaurants in La Punta refuse cards. Cash is mandatory.
  • Eating by Zicatela beach at noon: Crushing heat, no shade. Prefer La Punta (tree-shaded terraces) or the restaurants high up on Carrizalillo.
  • Drinking tap water: Not potable. All hotels provide filtered water—bring a water bottle.
  • Chemical sunscreen in the lagoon ecotoxic to bioluminescent plankton. Organic sunscreen required (Stream2Sea, Mexitan).

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions we get asked most often about Puerto Escondido.

How many nights should you plan to stay in Puerto Escondido?
Minimum 4 nights to explore the 3 areas (Zicatela, La Punta, calm beaches) + 2 key excursions (Manialtepec bioluminescence + Escobilla turtles). 7 nights if you want to add Mazunte/Zipolite, take surfing lessons, and truly disconnect in slow mode.
Do you need to know how to surf to go to Puerto Escondido?
Not at all. Carrizalillo and La Punta are perfect for beginners. or non-surfers (swimming, lessons, longboarding). Zicatela is reserved for experts but can be admired from the terraces. Manialtepec Lagoon, the Escobilla Turtle Sanctuary, and the sunsets of La Punta are accessible to everyone.
When is the best time to go?
Sweet spot December to March (second, sunny, medium waves, ideal climate). May-June = excellent compromise (waves coming in, still few people). To avoid: September-October (Tropical rains, rare but possible hurricanes). For surfers: June-August (largest swells at Zicatela).
How to get there from Europe?
2 options. (1) Paris → Mexico City flight (10-12h direct), then domestic flight Mexico → Puerto Escondido (PXM, 1h). Total 14-16h. (2) If combined with Oaxaca: Mexico → Oaxaca (1h flight), then 8h bus or domestic Oaxaca → PXM flight (35 min). Solution 1 remains the simplest for a Puerto-only trip.
Is Puerto Escondido safe?
Overall very sure (Mature tourist zone). Standard caution: avoid deserted beaches at night, do not display valuables, use official taxis. La Punta + Carrizalillo + Bacocho = very safe day and night. Zicatela = watch the sea (more dangerous than thieves).
What budget should I plan for?
Port to a wide spectrum. Luxury boutique (Hotel Escondido, Vivo, Casa TO) $ $250–$600 per night. Mid-range (Villasol, Aldea del Bazar) $ $100–180 per night. Surf hostels (La Loma, etc.): $ $30–60 per night. Meals: 1–4 T, 4–15 USD in the village; 1–4 T, 20–40 USD in La Punta. Turtle and lagoon tour: 1–4 T, 40–60 USD per person.
