Tulum — the only Maya site built by the sea. The 13th-century fortified city sits atop a 12 m cliff above a white-sand beach and turquoise sea. 2h morning visit (8-9am to avoid crowds + heat). Bonus: take the stairs down to the beach below (Playa Ruinas, swimming allowed).
The Yucatán is home to 6,000 cenotes — natural freshwater sinkholes connected to the world's largest underground river (Sac Actun). 4 types: open (Ik Kil, Suytun), semi-open (Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote), closed (Sak Aktun), cavern (Calavera, Carwash). Price: $10-25 entrance. Diving: Dos Ojos = a world legend.
1h from Tulum, deep in the jungle, Coba — a sprawling Maya city (50 km²). The Nohoch Mul pyramid rises 42 m, one of the last in Mexico still open to climbing (until 2020, then banned — check beforehand). Panoramic view over the endless jungle. Bike or pedicab essential (5 km of trails).
Akumal (“place of the turtles” in Maya) — a protected bay halfway between Playa and Tulum. Snorkeling from the beach with green turtles (present year-round, peak June-August). Regulated access: guided visit with a bio guide required ($35-50/pers, 1h). More relaxed: Akumal South (Half Moon Bay), a quiet beach.
South of Tulum, Sian Ka'an (“place where the sky is born”) — a 528,000-hectare UNESCO biosphere reserve. Mangroves, cenotes, turquoise lagoons, deserted beaches, isolated Maya ruins. Day trip: floating down the Maya canals, birdwatching (300+ species), dolphins, manatees. Limited access, certified operator.
The beach is organized around the Fifth Avenue (urban life), of seafront (beaches, beach clubs, ferry) and Playacar (Premium residential in the south). Understanding the 3 changes everything.

Cancún International (CUN) = the best-connected airport in Mexico. Air France Paris-CUN direct (10h). Also TUI, Corsair flights. Private transfers to Playa (45 min, $50), Tulum (1h30, $90).
Arrive at opening (9am) or late afternoon (4pm) to avoid the groups. Bring mask/snorkel. Chemical sunscreen BANNED (harms corals + algae). Buy reef-safe beforehand.
Tulum opens at 8am: arrive at 8am for a quiet hour before the Cancún buses (9:30am). Cobá: also opens 8am but the site is huge (50 km²) — renting a bike $5 is a must. Chichén Itzá (2h) as a day trip from the Riviera.
Brown seaweed invades some beaches from April to August. Tulum + Playa = affected. Cozumel + Holbox + Akumal protected (west side). Prefer hotels with active skimming barriers. See real-time monitoring.
Car = max freedom for cenotes/Cobá ($45-70/day). ADO bus = very efficient Cancún → Playa → Tulum ($10-15, 1h30). For a single destination = bus. To explore = car.
Akumal = swim with green turtles year-round (peak June-August). Supervised tour with bio-guide required ($35-50, 1h). Sunscreen banned, flotation vest provided. Book on site in the morning.
An island 45 min from Playa by ferry ($15). Palancar, Columbia, Santa Rosa sites = legendary. 2 morning dives $90. Water 28°C year-round, 30 m visibility. OW level is enough.
Passport valid 6 months after return. FMM card (~$30) issued on arrival at CUN, keep it for the entire stay.
