Preparing your trip to the Dominican Republic: practical guide 2026

The Dominican Republic is the most accessible Caribbean destination — but preparing it properly makes all the difference between a bubble stay and a real trip.

How much time to plan for

7 days : a single region — Samaná, or the north coast (Puerto Plata-Cabarete), or Santo Domingo + the interior.

10-12 days Two combined regions — Santo Domingo + Samaná, or North Coast + Mountainous Cibao. The ideal format.

14 days A complete tour—Santo Domingo, Samaná, Cibao, the north coast, and a jump to the southwest. Ambitious but doable.

My favorite format 10 days. Santo Domingo (2 nights), route to Samaná (4 nights), return via Cibao and Jarabacoa (2 nights), north coast (2 nights). Three facets of the country in one trip.

What budget to plan for

The currency is Dominican peso (DOP). In May 2026, 1 EUR = approximately 65-68 DOP. ATMs are everywhere in the cities. Cards are accepted in tourist establishments, but cash still reigns supreme in local grocery stores, markets, and transportation.

Economic : 40-60 EUR/day/person. Guesthouses, guaguas (local buses), comedores, public beaches. The DR is very affordable outside of resorts.

Comfort 80-150 EUR/day/person. Boutique hotels, car rental, restaurants, guided tours. Excellent value for money.

Premium 200-400 EUR/day/person. Charming lodges, boutique resorts (not all-inclusive), private experiences. High-end options exist, especially in Samaná and Casa de Campo.

When to go

Dry season (December-April): the best period. Temperatures 25-32°C, little rain. January-March = humpback whale season in Samaná.

Rainy season (May-November): tropical showers (often brief and intense), lush vegetation. Fewer people, lower prices. September-October = peak hurricane season.

Tourist photo Christmas in mid-January (North American and European holidays), Easter (April). Book in advance.

How to get around

Bus Local buses – air-conditioned on major routes (Caribe Tours, Metro), crowded and adventurous on secondary routes. Santo Domingo-Santiago (2.5 hours, 8-10 EUR), Santo Domingo-Samaná (3 hours, 10-12 EUR).

Car rental : The best option for exploring. Main roads in good condition. Right-hand driving. 30-50 EUR/day. Beware: Dominican driving is... creative. Motorcycles without headlights, optional stop signs, biggest vehicle has priority.

Motorcycle taxis Ubiquitous moto-taxis in small towns. 1-3 EUR per ride. Negotiate before getting on.

Internal flights : little necessity given the size of the country. Only useful for Santo Domingo-Puerto Plata if time is pressing.

Formalities and Health

Visa No visa required for French, Belgian, Swiss, and Canadian citizens (stay up to 30 days). Passport valid for 6 months after the date of entry. Tourist card included in the plane ticket since 2018.

Vaccines None required. Recommended: Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid.

Health Tap water is not drinkable – drink bottled water. Mosquitoes are present everywhere – mosquito repellent is essential, especially in the evening. No malaria in tourist areas, but dengue fever is circulating.

Security The Dominican Republic is generally safe for tourists. Standard precautions: avoid ostentation, be vigilant in popular areas of large cities, and use official taxis at night. Tourist areas (Samaná, Cabarete, Zona Colonial) are quiet.

The language

Dominican Spanish is fast, musical, and drops final consonants. Some useful words: «colmado» (neighborhood grocery store), «guagua» (bus), «chin» (a little), «vaina» (thing/stuff - the most used word in the country).

English is spoken in tourist areas but very little elsewhere. Knowing a few basics of Spanish completely changes the experience.
