About Palenque

The Maya city lost in the jungle

Palenque — one of the 3 great Maya capitals along with Tikal and Chichén Itzá, but the most mystical of the three. Located in the heart of the Chiapas jungle, its archaeological site counts more than 200 structures of which 95% are still buried beneath the canopy. Listed as UNESCO since 1987, it is one of the pinnacles of Classic Maya art (250-900 AD).

The site owes its fame to king K'inich Janaab' Pakal (Pakal the Great, 615-683 AD), whose tomb, discovered in 1952 beneath the Templo de las Inscripciones, is one of the major archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Pakal's jade mask is now in the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City.

The king monument of Palenque : a 27 m pyramid housing the sarcophagus of K'inich Janaab' Pakal the Great (tomb discovered in 1952 by Alberto Ruz Lhuillier). 620 Maya glyphs on the inner walls — the longest Maya inscription ever found. Tomb closed to the public since 2010 but a replica is on site.

A labyrinthine palace complex built over 400 years, around inner courtyards, vaulted rooms, royal latrines (the first in the Americas!). Its 4-story observatory tower is unique in Maya architecture — it was probably used to observe the winter solstice through the 4th-floor window.

Misol-Há Waterfall

25 min from Palenque, the Misol-Há waterfall drops from a 35 m cliff into an emerald pool in the heart of the jungle. Swimming allowed. A trail behind the waterfall leads to a small cave. Movie-set scenery — Predator was filmed here.

💡 Tip: arrive early (before 11am) to have the waterfall almost to yourself. Calmer water in the dry season.

Agua Azul Waterfalls

1h30 from Palenque, a succession of turquoise falls along 7 km of river. Water saturated with calcium carbonate, which gives it its unique color. Several natural pools for swimming. A sacred site for the Tzeltal.

💡 Tip: in the green season (June-October), rusty-brown water due to sediment — less photogenic. Prefer December-March.

4h southeast of Palenque, two Maya sites lost deep in the jungle only accessible by dugout canoe (Yaxchilán via the Usumacinta river) or 4x4. Bonampak holds the best-preserved Maya frescoes in the world (8th-century wall paintings). For adventurers.

Flavors of Chiapas

The cuisine of Chiapas is one of the most blended in Mexico: Tzotzil/Tzeltal Maya heritage, Zoque, Spanish and African influences. Chiapas also produces the best coffee in Mexico and the artisanal chocolate inherited from the Maya.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • ❌ Visiting Agua Azul in the green season (June-Oct): brown water, disappointing photos. Go in the dry season.
  • ❌ The site at noon in July-August: crushing heat, 90% humidity, little shade. Always 8am or 4pm.
  • ❌ Tourists alone toward Yaxchilán/Bonampak: sensitive area (Guatemala border), always in a group + certified guide.
  • ❌ No mosquito repellent in the green season: aggressive jungle mosquitoes. DEET 30% mandatory from 5pm.
  • ❌ Drinking tap water: Not potable. All hotels provide filtered water—bring a water bottle.
  • ❌ Touching or climbing the ruins: forbidden, fine, expulsion. Protected UNESCO site.

How much time should I plan for Palenque?
2-night minimum : 1 day for the site (4 hours), 1 day for the waterfalls (Misol-Há + Agua Azul). 3-4 nights if you want to add Yaxchilán/Bonampak (1-day excursion). Classic combination: 2-3 days Palenque + 5h bus + 3-4 days San Cristóbal.
How do you get there from the Yucatán?
Three options. (1) ADO bus from Mérida or Cancún via Villahermosa: ~9-12h, ~$45 (overnight bus). (2) Domestic flight Mérida/Cancún → Villahermosa then 2h drive. (3) Direct flight Mexico City → Palenque (PQM, 1h45). Option 3 = the fastest for a Palenque-only trip.
Palenque vs Chichén Itzá?
Chichen = more iconic, more restored, more touristy (50,000 visitors/day at the equinoxes). Palenque = more mystical, deep in the jungle, fewer crowds, more delicate Maya art. Our advice : do both in a Mexico trip. Chichén for the icon, Palenque for the soul.
When to go? Ideal period?
Sweet spot January to March (dry, cool, no mosquitoes, pure turquoise Agua Azul). Period to avoid: June-October (torrential rains, muddy jungle, mosquitoes, rusty-brown Agua Azul). November-December: an OK compromise with green jungle.
Are the waterfalls worth the detour?
Absolutely in the dry season. Misol-Há (25 min) = spectacular drop, swimming. Agua Azul (1h30) = a succession of turquoise falls along 7 km. Not to be missed if you're in Palenque. In the green season, reduced visual value.
What budget should I plan for?
Luxury boutique (Chan-Kah, Quinta Chanabnal): $150-300 USD/night. Mid-range (Tulijá Express): $80-130 USD/night. Jungle cabins (Maya Bell, El Panchan): $30-60 USD/night. Meals: $5-10 USD in the pueblo, $15-25 USD in hotel restaurants. Site: $5 entrance. Waterfalls excursion + driver: $90/day.
