The Río Celeste waterfall drops 30 m into a pool offluorescent turquoise blue water — an optical phenomenon unique in the world. 6 km round-trip trail (3-4h, moderate level) with steps through the jungle. Swimming strictly forbidden in the waterfall and the river (color protection). Strict quotas: 500 visitors/day, book online in advance.
At the spot called Los Teñideros, two whitish rivers meet and their confluence instantly takes on the fluorescent blue color. An optical phenomenon caused by light scattering off suspended aluminum particles (not a dye). Local researchers. The trail's iconic spot (4 km from the entrance).
The Tenorio volcano (1,916 m) dominates the national park but the summit is rarely accessible. Modest geothermal activity: fumaroles visible from a trail lookout, aguas termales (hot springs) on the trail (dipping your feet is acceptable). Combinable with the waterfall in a single visit.
Nearby, the indigenous Maleku community (650 people, the last still-spoken Maleku language). Cultural tour: traditional palenque visit, dance demonstrations, crafts (baskets, masks), ancestral medicine. Half-day $40-60/pers. Direct support to the community. Authentic, rich.
Heliconias Rainforest Lodge in Bijagua has 3 private hanging bridges and wildlife observation trails. Sloths, capuchins, multicolored birds, a garden of heliconias and orchids. A top alternative when Tenorio park is full/closed. 2-3h tour with naturalist guide $35-50/pers.

Tenorio Bijagua = highland tropical forest protected by the national park. 500+ bird species, sloths, capuchins, tapirs (rare), poison dart frogs. Wildlife easily accessible from park trails and lodges.
Bijagua = rural Tico cooking + specialties of the Maleku in the neighboring indigenous community. Family-run sodas for authentic gallo pinto, lodge restaurants, and a traditional lunch with the Maleku (book via the cultural tour).

Tenorio park is limited to 500 visitors/day. Book entry online at sinacr.org in advance, especially in high season (Dec-April). Open 8am-2pm. Mandatory exit before 4pm.
The Río Celeste color is most visible in dry season (Jan-April). After heavy rains, the color can be blurred for 24-48h. Check the weather forecast before visiting.
Swimming forbidden in the waterfall and the river (protecting the unique color). Trail aguas termales OK for feet. Keep dry clothes.
3 km out, 3 km back, 3-4h. Jungle steps, sometimes muddy. Boots/closed shoes, long pants. Water bottle.
Indigenous community 30 min away. Half-day, dances, crafts, lunch. Direct support to the community. Book ahead via lodge or DMC.
Star combination: Arenal → Tenorio (1h30 via Tilarán) → Guanacaste beach. Paved road, a standard car is enough.
