About Caracol & Cayo

The forgotten city, the sacred caves, the wild west Belize

To the west of Belize, against the Guatemalan border, the Cayo district is the perfect antithesis to the turquoise cays of the coast. Here, there's no sea: dense jungle, emerald rivers, high pine hills, sacred Mayan caves and - most importantly - Caracol, the country's largest ancient city, covering almost 200 km².

At its peak around 700 A.D., Caracol was home to some 150,000 inhabitants - more than its neighbor Tikal, with whom it fought a victorious war in 562. Its central pyramid Caana («Place of Heaven» in Mayan) rises to 43 metres, making it the tallest structure ever built in Belize.

The basis of all exploration is San Ignacio, district capital, with 17,000 inhabitants, at the confluence of the Río Mopan and Río Macal. From here, you can explore Mayan sites (Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech), the sacred cave ATM Cave, and the pine forest of Mountain Pine Ridge.

Our field tip: spend 3 to 4 nights in San Ignacio or in a jungle lodge along the Río Macal. Caracol alone deserves a whole day (4×4, 2h one-way track). ATM Cave, another. The rest of the time: Xunantunich, local coffee and the natural pools of Río On.

The 5 experiments signature

What we systematically recommend to our travellers in the Cayo district. With, under each experience, the secret terrain that makes all the difference.

1 Caracol Caana - Belize's highest Mayan pyramid, dominating the canopy of the Chiquibul Forest.
🏛️ Archaeological jewel

Caracol - the forgotten city

The largest Mayan site in Belize, spread over 200 km² of jungle, still largely buried under the canopy. The pyramid Caana («Sky Place») rises to 43 m - still the tallest structure built in the country. On site: the Gran Plaza, the inscribed steles and the Hieroglyphic Stairway 2 which recounts the victorious wars against Tikal and Naranjo. Day trip from San Ignacio.

🤫 Secret Pro : leave early with the 9:30 a.m. escorted convoy (rangers), arrive in Caracol at noon when 90 % from other groups leave: you have Caana to yourself for 1 hour.
💡 Tip: combine on the same day Caracol + Río On Pools + Big Rock Falls (Pine Ridge on the way back). An intense but unforgettable 12-hour day.
2 Xunantunich El Castillo Maya temple overlooking the jungle
⛪ Accessible Mayan heritage

Xunantunich & crank ferry

Xunantunich («the stone maiden» in Mayan) is the most accessible site in the district: 30 min from San Ignacio, authorized climbing of'El Castillo (40 m, 360° view over the jungle to Guatemala). But above all, you get there by crossing the Río Mopan on a crank ferry manual - a timeless experience, operated by a smuggler since 1928.

🤫 Secret Pro : arrive at the opening (8am) - the site is deserted, we climb El Castillo without crowds, soft light on the stucco friezes on the east side.
👑 VIP option: private English-speaking guide combining Xunantunich + Cahal Pech on a half-day tour (~$120/group).
3 Entrance to a sacred limestone cave in the Belize jungle
🕯️ Sacred adventure

ATM Cave - Crystal Maiden

Actun Tunichil Muknal («Grotte du Sépulcre de Pierre») has been classified Top 10 underground sites worldwide by National Geographic. 7h total tour, including 3h swimming and walking in the cave. Inside: ritually broken ceramics, preserved skeletons from Mayan sacrifices in situ, and the famous Crystal Maiden - skeleton of an entirely calcified young woman, sparkling under the headlamp. Intermediate level (able to swim, cold water).

🤫 Secret Pro : licensed operators only (Pacz Tours, MayaWalk). Photos strictly prohibited since 2012 - a tourist had dropped a camera on a skull. We live the experience without a screen.
💡 Tip: closed shoes that can get wet (never flip-flops), water bottle, swimsuit under clothing. Dry bag provided by the agency.
4 Maya hilltop structure in San Ignacio Belize
🏛️ Maya intramuros

Cahal Pech - Maya in the middle of San Ignacio

The only Mayan site that can be visited on foot from the center of San Ignacio: a 15-minute climb up the hill. Cahal Pech literally means «place of ticks» in Yucatec Maya - a modern name given because the site was used as a cattle pasture prior to excavation. A small royal site from the Classical period, 34 structures distributed around 7 plazas, occupied as early as 1200 BC.

🤫 Secret Pro : at sunset, you often have the site to yourself - panoramic views of San Ignacio and the Río Macal valley.
💡 Tip: ideal for a quiet morning - small museum at the entrance, in 1h30 it's done, perfect before an afternoon at the river.
5 Big Rock Falls jungle waterfall in Mountain Pine Ridge Belize
🌲 Nature adventure

Mountain Pine Ridge - pines, waterfalls, caves

1 hour from San Ignacio, the altitude rises (700 m) and the tropical jungle gives way to an pine forest unique in Central America. On the program: Big Rock Falls (45 m waterfall, bathing in an emerald pool), Río On Pools (a series of natural pools on granite slabs), and Rio Frio Cave (a huge limestone vault with a river running through it).

🤫 Secret Pro : Big Rock Falls around 11 a.m., ideal light for photography. Río On Pools at 2pm after picnic, warmer water.
👑 VIP option: Private 4×4 with naturalist guide, picnic lunch prepared by the lodge, half or full day.

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips that guides don't give. 8 terrain shortcuts to save time, energy and frustration in the Cayo district.

🚙
Transport

Caracol = 4×4 mandatory

85 km including 60 km of jungle track. No normal vehicles pass. Always in convoy escorted by rangers (departure 9.30 a.m. Douglas D'Silva). Never attempt without a local guide.

📵
ATM Cave

No photos allowed

Strict ban since 2012 (a sacred skull damaged by a fallen camera). We live without screens. Remembrance = memory and official photos of the guide after the tour.

👟
Equipment

Soak-proof closed-toe shoes

For ATM Cave: water-friendly trail running shoes (3h in the cave with swimming passages). For Caracol: walking shoes, sticky red earth in green season.

💵
Currency

USD accepted everywhere

The Belize Dollar is fixed at 2 BZD = 1 USD. We pay for everything in USD, exchange returned in BZD. Cash essential outside hotels (few POS terminals in the jungle). Atlantic Bank ATMs in San Ignacio.

💧
Climate

3L water / day minimum

Tropical humidity, 30°C in full sun. Caracol = 12h day without permanent shade. Hydration x2 vs Europe. Reusable water bottle + rehydration salts (local Suero Oral) from pharmacies.

🛂
Formalities

No visa, 30 days

French, Swiss, Belgian, Canadian: no visa, passport valid 6 months after return. Exit tax $40 USD (often included in air ticket, check).

🗣️
Language

English + Creole + Spanish

Belize is English-speaking (formerly British Honduras). But in Cayo, on the Guatemalan border, Spanish is widely spoken. A few words of Kriol amuse the locals: «Weh di go aan?» = «How are you?.

🦟
Health

Mosquito repellent DEET 30 %

Presence of dengue and zika in the region. No vital risk with protection. DEET 30 % spray morning and evening, long sleeves at dusk, no vaccination required (yellow fever if arriving from a high-risk country).

⚠️ Avoid the classic pitfalls

  • Caracol in the green season: muddy track, sometimes closed June-November. Check with the rangers or your lodge the day before.
  • ATM Cellar with grandchildren : minimum recommended age 12, swimming ability compulsory, 3h in the cave.
  • ATM Cave photos : strictly prohibited since 2012, fined and immediately evicted from the site.
  • Caracol alone, without convoy: Isolated track, Guatemala border, attacks rare but reported. Always in escorted groups.
  • Drink tap water: bottled or filtered water in lodges. No ice cubes in rural areas.
  • Get up close to the iguanas at the lodge: they bite. To be admired from a respectful distance.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Caracol and the Cayo district of Belize.

How many nights in Cayo?
3 to 4 nights minimum. A full day for Caracol (early start, late return, jungle 4×4), a day for ATM Cave (7h tour), half a day for Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. If you add Mountain Pine Ridge or a canoe trip on the Macal, 5 nights are ideal. Cayo is also perfect base to cross the border to Tikal (Guatemala) on a day trip.
Is Caracol worth the 4-hour 4×4 round trip?
Absolutely yes - it's Belize's only Mayan site on the scale of Tikal, with a 43 m pyramid and 200 km² of archaeological jungle. The trail is part of the adventure (views of Mountain Pine Ridge, river crossings). We usually combine it with Big Rock Falls or Río On Pools on the way back for a swim.
Is ATM Cave dangerous?
No, but it's a demanding tour 7h, 3h in the cave, swimming in cold water, narrow passages, light climbing. Minimum recommended age 12. Secured by experienced guides (Pacz Tours and MayaWalk only). No claustrophobics, swimming skills compulsory. No accidents since opening to the public in 1998.
What's your budget for Cayo?
From $150-220 USD/night in a comfortable jungle lodge (Black Rock Lodge, Ka'ana entry), $300-500 USD/night in natural luxury (Ka'ana villas, The Lodge at Chaa Creek). Meals $8-15 local, $25-40 lodge restaurant. Excursions ATM Cave $100-120/pers, Caracol $90-110/pers, Xunantunich $50-70/pers (transport included).
Can we combine Cayo and the turquoise cays?
Absolutely - it's the ideal combination in Belize. 3-4 nights on Cayo (jungle, maya, cave) then 4-5 nights on Caye Caulker or Ambergris (Blue Hole diving, snorkeling, beach). Transfer: 2h van San Ignacio → Belize City + 1h30 water cab to the cayes. Our Toucan team organizes everything on Dynamics.
When should you travel to Caracol?
December to May = dry season, accessible tracks, passable jungle. February-March is our sweet spot: still cool, with active wildlife and no Easter crowds. Avoid June to October heavy showers, Caracol trail sometimes closed for several days at a time, ATM Cave may be closed if there is flooding.
