About Hopkins

A Garífuna village, Afro-Caribbean heritage, Caribbean beach and living culture

Hopkins is a Garífuna village of about 1,500 inhabitants, stretched along 10 km of Caribbean beach between the Maya Mountains to the west and the Belize Barrier Reef to the east (the world's 2nd largest barrier reef). People don't come here for all-nighters or a resort scene — they come for a unique Afro-Caribbean culture, listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in 2001.

The Garífuna are the descendants of African maroons and Indigenous Caribs from the island of Saint Vincent, exiled by the British to the island of Roatán (Honduras) in 1797. From there, they spread along the Caribbean coast of Central America — Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala. In Belize, their arrival is commemorated every November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day, a national holiday.

Punta drumming lessons — Lebeha Drumming Center

The Lebeha Drumming Center, at the north end of the village, is the most renowned Garífuna drumming school in Belize. 1h or 2h lessons, group or private, with two traditional drums — primero (high, melodic) and segundo (bass, rhythm). The master teaches the basics of Point, the emblematic rhythm, and antiphonal songs in the Garífuna language.

Half a day with a Garífuna family learning to prepare Border (local fish + machucau of green and ripe plantain pounded in a wooden mortar + coconut-spice sauce), traditional cassava bread (ereba) , or Sere (fish-coconut soup). You go to the market for the ingredients, cook, and share the meal with the family.

A national holiday in Belize, celebrating the arrival of the Garífuna in 1832 from Honduras. On November 19, Hopkins and especially Dangriga vibrate all day long: a dawn canoe reenactment of the arrival, parades in traditional costumes, Pointdances, drum ceremony, antiphonal songs, community meals. Raw emotion and palpable pride.

20 min from Hopkins, this national park protects 2,800 ha of tropical forest at the foot of the Maya Mountains: 3 waterfalls (Bocawina Falls, Antelope Falls, Three Sisters), hiking trails, minor Maya ruins, and one of the best zipline courses in Belize (7 platforms, canopy views). Also possible: a visit to a neighboring organic cacao farm, raw cacao tasting.

Garífuna cuisine is a cultural signature of its own: fresh fish, coconut, cassava, plantain, spices. An ancestral West African tradition reinvented on the Caribbean coast. A must-try in Hopkins.

  • ❌ Attempting the Blue Hole from Hopkins: too far (5h round trip by boat). Better from Ambergris or Caye Caulker.

  • ❌ Drinking tap water: free filtered water at the hotel, a reusable bottle is essential.
  • ❌ Regular sunscreen on the reef: destroys coral, banned in Belize.

Is Hopkins suitable for families?
Yes, for families with children from 6-7 years old. Calm, safe beach, hotels with pools (Hopkins Bay, Almond Beach), fun activities (drumming, cooking, easy jungle at Mayflower). Snorkeling at Tobacco Caye accessible from age 8. Sandflies at dusk = repellent required for the little ones.
Is it dangerous?
Belize's Garífuna coast (Hopkins, Dangriga, Placencia) is one of the safest areas in the country. A tight-knit village community, regular tourist presence, low crime. Standard precautions: don't display valuables, walk accompanied at night on the deserted beach, lock your accommodation.
What budget should I plan for?
