How do you get from one country to the other?

The crossing happens at the land border of Peñas Blancas, on the Pan-American Highway, by private transfer or bus. Allow half a day including formalities. Note: Costa Rican rental cars generally don't cross the border — you change vehicles (or drivers) on the Nicaragua side. It's one of the things a local agency handles for you.

When to go and what budget?

The best time matches Costa Rica's (see When to go to Costa Rica): the dry season, from December to April, is ideal on both sides. Budget-wise, Nicaragua pulls the bill down — a good way to extend the trip without blowing up the budget.
