The promise

All of Panama, in ten days

Panama is more than its canal — but what a canal! This ten-day tour makes it the guiding thread of a complete journey: the capital and its five centuries of history, a cruise among the cargo ships between the locks, a day of sharing with the Emberá of the Chagres river, the Caribbean coast and its Spanish fort, then four nights on a private island in the San Blas archipelago, territory of the Guna people. Small French-speaking group, fifteen travelers maximum, logistics fully taken care of.

Panama City → Panama Canal → Río Chagres & Emberá village → San Lorenzo Fort & Caribbean coast → Casco Viejo → San Blas Archipelago (Guna Yala)

Day by day

The itinerary in detail

Landing at Tocumen International Airport, where your driver awaits whatever the hour. Transfer to a 4★ hotel in the heart of Panama City : from your room, the forest of skyscrapers sets the tone. Free evening to taste the energy of Central America's only true metropolis.

The big day: from the port of Gamboa, you sail the Panama Canal in the same direction as the cargo ships. First the Culebra Cut, a legendary gash through the cordillera; then the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks, where your boat descends 27 meters in three basins, before passing under the Bridge of the Americas and arriving triumphantly at the Flamenco marina. Lunch on board, eyes fixed on the century-old steel gates.

On-board commentary is given in English and Spanish; a private French-speaking guide can be added as an option (quote on request).

An hour by road, then the dugout canoe takes over: forty-five minutes up the Chagres river between two walls of forest, watching for toucans, monkeys, and caimans. The Emberá village welcomes you with color and music — weavings, jagua body painting, the secrets of medicinal plants — around a lunch of fish and plantains served in a banana leaf. Back to the city in the late afternoon, your head full of images.

The isthmus is only eighty kilometers wide here: in one morning, you cross from the Pacific to the Caribbean coast. At the end of a tongue of jungle, San Lorenzo fort (1598) has stood guard over the mouth of the Chagres for more than four centuries — its coral-stone cannons watched the gold of the Americas and the pirate Henry Morgan go by. On the way back, a stop at the Gatún locks, the most monumental on the canal.

A morning among the ruins of Panamá La Vieja, the first Spanish settlement on the Pacific (1519), then a guided stroll through the Old Town, a World Heritage site: cobbled lanes, wrought-iron balconies, Plaza de Francia and Plaza Bolívar. Lunch in the quarter, a visit to the canal museum if time allows, and the end of the day at the Miraflores platform, watching ships rise from one ocean toward the other. On the evening agenda: packing for the islands.

Early in the morning, a small plane from Albrook airfield: in twenty minutes, the window fills with coral-fringed islets. At Playón Chico, your Guna host awaits for the motorized canoe crossing to the ecolodge, set on its own island in the archipelago of Guna Yala : bungalows facing the sea, solar panels, catch-of-the-day cooking. In the afternoon, you do nothing — and that's exactly the plan.

Depending on availability at the San Blas lodges, this island stay may temporarily be replaced by an equivalent stay in Bocas del Toro, in a stilt lodge — the applicable formula is confirmed at booking.

Three full days in the comarca of Guna Yala, where the Guna people govern their 365 islands themselves. Your hosts organize outings every day: snorkeling over the coral gardens, canoe trips to islets that fit six people, visits to villages with sand-covered lanes, and meetings with the seamstresses of molas, those hand-sewn textiles with dazzling patterns. Full board at the lodge, hammocks at will, zero notifications.

This portion is experienced in accompanied freedom: the included excursions are led by your Guna hosts, without a tour guide.

Early breakfast facing the sea, canoe to the Playón Chico airstrip and domestic flight (included) back to Panama City, reached in the early afternoon. Plan an international flight departing after 4pm — and keep a mola in your carry-on, a souvenir from the end of the world.
