About the Canal

Eighth wonder of the world, hyphen of two oceans

Inaugurated on August 15, 1914 With the passage of the SS Ancon, the Panama Canal is one of the most prodigious engineering feats of the 20th century. 80 km long, three sets of locks — Gatún Atlantic side, Pedro Miguel and Miraflores on the Pacific side—which lift ships 26 meters up to the level of the Gatún Reservoir and then lower them back down to the other ocean.

Behind the Feat: France's Failure in Ferdinand de Lesseps (1880–1889) brought to its knees by malaria, yellow fever, and bankruptcy—followed by the American recovery under Theodore Roosevelt (1904–1914), following Panama's independence from Colombia in 1903. The human cost was enormous: 22,000 deaths under France, 5 600 under the United States. Fully returned to Panama on December 31, 1999 under the Torrijos-Carter Treaty.

The'2016 expansion added two new locks — Coconut on the Pacific side and Agua Clara Atlantic coast — capable of hosting the Neopanamax, 366x49 m giants. Today, the Canal generates 1.1 billion USD of annual revenue and remains the economic engine of the country.

Our on-the-ground tip: Combine Miraflores in the morning (9 a.m.–11 a.m., frequent departures) with Agua Clara in the afternoon. And if possible, take a partial boat trip from Gamboa—enjoy the experience from the deck.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Visiting Miraflores midday: 11 AM - 2 PM = slack tide ships, maximum queue, scorching sun.
  • Believing that everything can be seen in 2 hours: Miraflores requires 3-4 hours to enjoy the museum + 2 ship passages.
  • Confusing Miraflores and Agua Clara 90 min drive between the two, plan for 2 separate half-days.
  • Arriving at Barro Colorado without a reservation: 12 visitors/day maximum, fully booked 1-2 months in advance.
  • Ignore the risk of lines at Tocumen 45 min for immigration possible, allow 3 hours buffer before connecting flight.
  • Underestimating Heat: 32°C + 85% humidity = rapid exhaustion. Water, a hat, and sunscreen are required.
