Costa Rica & Panama: The Grand Tour

The day opens on the slopes of Poás volcano: a guided tour of a coffee plantation, from plot to roasting, tasting cup in hand. After a farm-to-table lunch, a stop with the artisans of Grecia and Sarchí — home of the painted oxcarts — then a gradual climb toward the Tilarán cordillera. By evening, you sleep in an eco-lodge at the gates of the cloud forest of Monteverde.

Optional: a night walk with a nocturnal wildlife specialist (fees payable locally).

Binoculars around your neck, you follow your naturalist guide into one of the reserves of Monteverde — Curi-Cancha, Santa Elena or the historic reserve. Mist clings to the epiphytes, the trails ring with birdsong: more than 400 species are recorded here. The day closes in a garden where clouds of hummingbirds battle over the feeders.

In the afternoon, hanging bridges at canopy level or ziplines for the daring (optional, fees payable locally).

Between Monteverde and La Fortuna, the road unrolls a landscape of cattle-farming hills and lookouts over Lake Arenal. You stop often: a coffee facing the lake, a craft stand, a coati crossing the road. On arrival, a charming hotel at the foot of the volcanic cone, pool and gardens to end the day gently.

In the evening, soak in volcanic hot springs — access offered by some hotels on the tour, otherwise optional (fees payable locally).

Morning exploration in the national park area of the volcano Arenal : the trails cross old lava tongues, and your guide turns the walk into an open-air volcanology class. At noon, a Costa Rican table at an estancia on the other slope, followed by a visit to its food crops and its bio-methanization unit. The rest of the afternoon is free — La Fortuna is only minutes away.

An early rise and a generous breakfast in Guápiles before boarding at La Pavona: here the road ends and the water takes over. An hour's navigation between jungle banks drops you at the lodge in Tortuguero. In the afternoon, discover the village, stretched between canal and Caribbean sea, then walk back along the wild beach.

In the green season (July-October), an optional night outing to witness sea turtles nesting (fees payable locally).

A full day devoted to the national park of Tortuguero. By boat, low on the water, you surprise caimans, green iguanas, howler monkeys, and a whole tropical aviary; on foot, the lodge trails complete the picture. Between outings, pool, frog garden, and hammocks — the Caribbean rhythm settles in.

Morning boat to La Pavona, then a crossing of the great Braulio Carrillo forest massif, buffet lunch en route. You return to San Jose in the late afternoon for a convivial dinner with the group — a chance to compare photos before the trip's second act.

Departure for Irazú volcano, the country's volcanic rooftop at 3,432 m: nested craters, an acid lake with green reflections and, if the sky is clear, both seas visible in a single glance. In the afternoon, the Pan-American Highway climbs into the Talamanca cordillera before plunging down a small road toward San Gerardo de Dota : giant bamboo, tree ferns, crisp mountain air. Night in an eco-lodge on the banks of the Savegre river.

Waking to hummingbird trills, then setting off with your guide to the nesting sites spotted by local trackers: the valley of San Gerardo de Dota is one of the best places in Central America to spot the resplendent quetzal. In the afternoon, a trail along the Savegre to the waterfall, then an evening by the fire, at 2,200 m altitude.

After a last look at the heights of the Cerro de la Muerte, the road descends to the southern Pacific coast and the small river port of Sierpe. The boat then enters one of the country's largest mangrove labyrinths before reaching Drake Bay, sentinel of the Osa Peninsula. Two nights in a rustic seaside inn — simple comfort, immense nature.

Boarding at dawn for the Sirena or San Pedrillo station: here you are in the national park of Corcovado, Costa Rica's wildest sanctuary. All day long, guided hikes between beach and primary forest: scarlet macaws in formation, peccaries, spider monkeys, and — who knows — the massive silhouette of a tapir. Picnic facing the ocean, back to Drake for sunset.

You head back up the Sierpe river in the early morning — the mangrove often saves a few last surprises — before taking the coastal road toward Manuel Antonio. On its trails, the country's most famous little park concentrates three-toed sloths, capuchins, and squirrel monkeys above turquoise coves. In the evening, check-in at a waterfront hotel on the Tárcoles side.

A gentle two-hour cruise on the Tárcoles river and the Guacalillo estuary, on the edge of Carara park: American crocodiles by the dozen, herons, roseate spoonbills, and the scarlet ballet of the macaws. After lunch, the afternoon is yours — beach, pool, lazing. Tomorrow, a change of country.

One last stop at the Tárcoles bridge to salute the crocodiles, then the road to San José airport and takeoff — ticket included — for Panama City. On landing, welcome and transfer to your 4★ hotel in the heart of the capital, whose skyline rivals Miami's.

An exceptional cruise on the Panama Canal : boarding at Gamboa, your boat passes through the Culebra Cut — carved into the continental divide — then descends the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores locks down to Pacific level. Passage under the Bridge of the Americas, lunch served on board, and disembarkation at the Flamenco marina facing the skyscrapers.

Heading for Chagres National Park, then forty-five minutes by dugout canoe up the river, herons and kingfishers as escort. At the village, the Emberá community shares its day: weavings and carvings, jagua body painting, medicinal plants explained along a forest walk, dances to the sound of flutes — and a lunch of grilled fish served in a banana leaf. Back to Panama City at dusk.

A day crossing the isthmus to the Caribbean coast, via Colón. Built of coral blocks from 1598 above the mouth of the Chagres, San Lorenzo fort keeps the memory of Spanish galleons and of the pirate Henry Morgan, who stormed it in 1670. You then discover the Gatún locks, the canal's centerpiece on the Atlantic side, before returning to the capital.

In the morning, the ruins of Panamá La Vieja tell the story of the very first Spanish city on the Pacific (1519); the afternoon belongs to the Old Town, a UNESCO site: flowered balconies, Plaza de Francia, Plaza Bolívar, baroque churches. Lunch in the quarter, a detour via the canal museum if the schedule allows, then a stop at the Miraflores platform to watch cargo ships change oceans. Tonight, you pack your bags: tomorrow, the islands.

Morning takeoff from Albrook: twenty minutes in the air and the archipelago of the San Blas appears, a constellation of coral islets set on a lagoon. At the Playón Chico airstrip, your Guna host takes you by motorized canoe to the ecolodge: bungalows facing the sea on a private island, solar power, catch of the day on the menu. First swim mandatory.

Depending on island lodge availability, this Caribbean interlude may occasionally be operated in Bocas del Toro, in a stilt lodge — the exact formula is confirmed at booking.

Three days at the tempo of the tides in the autonomous territory of Guna Yala.
