Kingdom of Resplendent quetzal

San Gerardo de Dota — high-altitude valley (2,200 m) in the heart of the Talamanca Range, only 1.5 hours from San José on the Pan-American Highway. Mythical bird sanctuary home to the largest population of resplendent quetzals in Costa Rica, plus 250 other species (14 hummingbirds, barbets, motmots).

Climate of cool cloud forest (10-22°C). Forests of'Centennial oaks (oaks), apple trees, Savegre waterfall. Very different from the rest of CR – alpine valley atmosphere. Family lodges (Trogón, Savegre Hotel) with hummingbird feeders attract quetzals to their gardens. Local trout raised in the streams.

Our on-site team's recommendation (DMC on site since 2018): 2 nights are ideal for San Gerardo de Dota — 1 day for quetzal observation at dawn + trails, 1 day for Savegre waterfall + trout. Quetzal breeding season: March-June. Top combination: SJO → San Gerardo → Manuel Antonio (4h).
