The promise

The best of two countries, in twelve days

One trip, two Central Americas: first Costa Rica's deep south — Irazú volcano, the quetzals of the Dota valley, Drake Bay and the legendary Corcovado park, then Manuel Antonio and the Tárcoles crocodiles. Next, a flight (included) drops you in Panama: canal cruise, meeting the Emberá, the Caribbean fort of San Lorenzo, and the colonial lanes of the Casco Viejo. All guided in French, in a group limited to fifteen travelers, without a single wasted day.

San José → Irazú Volcano → San Gerardo de Dota → Drake Bay & Corcovado → Manuel Antonio → Tárcoles → Panama City → Panama Canal → Caribbean coast & San Lorenzo Fort → Casco Viejo

Day by day

The itinerary in detail

Upon exiting the international airport San Jose, a driver awaits you — whatever your flight time. Short transfer to a well-located 4★ hotel: shops, restaurants, pool, and gym just steps away. Free evening to land gently and, why not, try a first casado at a neighborhood soda.

Arriving the day before? Add a pre-tour night in San José — welcome, transfer, and breakfast included (see “Extend the adventure”).

Early departure for Costa Rica's volcanic rooftop: Irazú, 3,432 m, whose main crater holds a sulfurous lake with green reflections. On a clear day, the summit offers a rare privilege — seeing the Caribbean and the Pacific in a single glance. After a typical lunch, the road climbs into the Talamanca cordillera then plunges toward San Gerardo de Dota : giant bamboo, tree ferns, the crisp air of the “cold jungles”. Check-in at an eco-lodge on the banks of the Savegre river and a first observation walk with your naturalist guide.

Hummingbirds sound the wake-up call around the lodge. Binoculars around your neck, you then set off with the guide on the trails of San Gerardo de Dota, one of the very best territories in Central America for spotting the resplendent quetzal — local trackers report active nests every morning. In the afternoon, the river trail leads you to a pretty waterfall, among lichens, wild avocado trees, and epiphytes. Buffet dinner by the fire, night at 2,200 m altitude.

A great swing toward the southern Pacific: over the ridges of the Cerro de la Muerte, down to San Isidro and the Costanera, to the small river port of Sierpe. There, you trade the minibus for a boat: the river descent winds through one of Central America's largest mangroves before opening onto Drake Bay, at the tip of the Osa Peninsula. You land directly on the beach — sandals recommended! Two nights in a rustic, charming inn: comfort is simple, the setting spectacular.

At 7am, the boat heads for the Sirena or San Pedrillo station, in the heart of the national park of Corcovado — National Geographic called it the most biologically intense place on Earth. Guided walks between deserted beach and primary forest: scarlet macaws, peccaries, anteaters, and perhaps the elusive Baird's tapir. Picnic facing the ocean, another hike, then back to Drake in mid-afternoon for a due-west sunset, feet in the sand.

A morning trip back up the Sierpe — one last safari along the mangroves — then the coastal road north. In the afternoon, a guided hike in the national park of Manuel Antonio : just 638 hectares, but an insane density of capuchins, squirrel monkeys, sloths, and iguanas above postcard beaches. In the evening, check-in at a hotel on the Tárcoles coast, pool and beach within reach.

This morning, a roughly two-hour cruise on the Guacalillo estuary and the Tárcoles river, on the edge of Carara park: you sail among one of the world's highest concentrations of American crocodiles, under the flight of scarlet macaws and wading birds. Lunch on return, then a relaxing afternoon between pool and Pacific — your last Costa Rican evening.

Breakfast, then the road to San José airport — with one last stop at the Tárcoles bridge to salute the crocodiles. Boarding the flight (included) to Panama City : on arrival, welcome, transfer, and check-in at a 4★ hotel in the heart of Central America's most vertical capital. Free evening facing the skyline.

An exceptional day: from Gamboa, you board to descend the Panama Canal on the Pacific side. The boat crosses the Culebra Cut — carved right through the continental divide —, passes the Pedro Miguel then Miraflores locks, dropping 27 meters in total, and slips under the Bridge of the Americas before reaching the Flamenco marina, skyline as a backdrop. Lunch served on board, commentary by a local guide (English/Spanish).

Optional: private French-speaking guide for the canal cruise (quote upon request).

Heading for Chagres National Park: forty-five minutes by dugout canoe on the river — a foretaste of the Amazon — to reach an Emberá village. A musical welcome, jagua body painting, basketry and carvings, a botanical walk around medicinal plants: a day of encounter, simple and true. Lunch — grilled fish and plantains served in a banana leaf — is savored to the sound of traditional dances. Back to Panama City in the late afternoon.

This morning, you cross the isthmus to the Caribbean coast, near Colón. Perched on a promontory at the mouth of the Chagres, San Lorenzo fort (1598), built of coral blocks, still keeps its colonial cannons — the pirate Henry Morgan seized it in 1670. You then visit the Gatún locks, the canal's most imposing, before returning to Panama City at the end of the day.

A beautiful finale: the ruins of Panamá La Vieja, the first Spanish city on the Pacific (1519), then the flowered balconies of the Old Town, a UNESCO site — churches, Plaza de Francia, Plaza Bolívar. Lunch in the heart of the quarter, a visit to the canal museum if time allows, and a stop at the Miraflores locks platform to watch ships transit. Transfer to Panama City airport (plan a flight after 4pm). Pura vida — and hasta pronto!
