D&D Brewery = institution. 30-minute tour ($5) + 4-beer tasting. 14-room eco-rustic lodge ($60-100/night). Friendly expat/local restaurant. If you want the lake's signature ambience = sleep here.

🚗
TRANSPORT

Ideal private car

Private car + driver = Toucan solution. CA-5 public buses work ($5-10) but are uncomfortable and stop far from the lake. Our DMC organizes direct Tegus/SAP transfers with lake stops.

🌳
CERRO AZUL

Sweater required at altitude

Cerro Azul Meámbar (up to 2,080 m) = cloud forest, cool climate (15°C). Sweater, fleece, boots for green season. Local guide ($15-25). Las Cebollas trail 4h moderate, panoramic view of lake. Optimum dry season.

💵
BUDGET

Very accessible

Budget-friendly region. Hotels $40-150, meals $5-15, tours $15-40. USD accepted but Lempira recommended outside hotels. Cards not widely accepted except Glorias and D&D Brewery. Cash recommended.

⚠️ Avoid the classic pitfalls

  • Stay >2 nights without active birding: quiet area, no birding/randoning = possible boredom.
  • Birding without a guide : 480 species = difficult to identify without an ornithologist. Local guide essential.
  • Pulhapanzak without spare : wet trail at 100%. Waterproof bag + dry clothes.
  • Driving at night : winding CA-5 road, wildlife. Daytime driving.
  • Missing D&D Brewery: classic mistake. At least lunch + 30-minute tour.
  • Drink tap water: non-potable. Bottled water only.
