About Tulum

Where the Yucatán holds his breath

Tulum is the impossible image: a Millennial Mayan city perched on a limestone cliff, a powdery sand beach where the water shifts from jade to turquoise, and behind it, a jungle dotted with sacred cenotes. Nowhere else in Mexico do you find this pure overlap of archaeology, nature, and boho-chic lifestyle.

It is also the epicenter of a movement — sunrise yoga, mindful eating, Wi-Fi-free signature hotels — that has transformed a fishing village into the international capital of slow travel. The opening of Tulum Airport (TQO) at the end of 2023 has definitively established the destination.

Our on-site tip: a minimum of 3 days to soak in the three sides of Tulum (ruins, cenotes, beach). 5 if you really want to disconnect.

1 Tulum Mayan Ruins Ground View — House of the Halach Uinic
🏛️ Archaeological site

The Ruins of Tulum & El Castillo

The only Mayan city in Mexico built right on the coast. El Castillo, the Templo de las Pinturas, the Casa del Cenote—a compact site (a 1.5-hour tour) with a breathtaking view of the reef.

🤫 Secret Pro : Arrive at opening (8 a.m.) — shadows still low, perfect photos, excursion cruises absent before 10 a.m.
💡 Tip: Head down to the small beach below the site ($0, undeveloped) for the «ruins + beach» photo.
2 Cenote Ik Kil — turquoise waters and Yucatán vines
Sacred cenotes

Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos & Calavera Cenote

Three legendary cenotes just 10 minutes from the pueblo. Gran Cenote for freshwater turtles, Dos Ojos for diving in the world’s second-largest underground cave system, and Calavera for cliff jumping.

🤫 Secret Pro : Gran Cenote before 11 AM to avoid the Cancun buses. Biodegradable sunscreen required.
👑 VIP Option: Guided cave dive at Dos Ojos (Casa Cenote → submerged cathedral, ~$120/person).
3 Paradise Beach in Tulum — white sand and turquoise water
Iconic beach

Playa Paraiso & the Hotel Zone

8 km of free public beach, powdery white sand, turquoise water. Beach clubs lined up along the shore (Papaya Playa, Nomade, Be Tulum) — admission is often free with a purchase.

💡 Tip: Playa Paraíso = the most beautiful free public beach. Parking $5. Arrive before 11 a.m.
🤫 Secret Pro : South of the hotel zone (toward Sian Ka'an) = practically deserted, with even finer sand.
4 Aerial view of mangrove in Yucatán — Sian Ka'an
🌿 UNESCO World Heritage Site

Sian Ka'an — The Forgotten Biosphere

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of 5,200 km² at the gates of Tulum. Turquoise lagoons, mangroves, submerged Mayan cities, eagle rays, manatees, dolphins. The wild side of the peninsula.

👑 VIP Option: Private tour from Muyil to Boca Paila with a boat ride on the lagoon (Mayan Canal), ~$180 per person, full day.
🤫 Secret Pro : Spend a night with fishermen in Punta Allen—the absolute edge of the world.
5 Mayan pyramid in the jungle — Cobá Nohoch Mul
Maya jungle

Cobá & Nohoch Mul

50 minutes from Tulum, a Mayan city swallowed by the jungle. The Nohoch Mul pyramid (138 ft) is one of the tallest in the Yucatán. Visit by bicycle or Mayan tuk-tuk among the temples.

🤫 Secret Pro : Rent a bike on site ($5) to explore the 6 km of trails between the groups of ruins.
💡 Tip: combine with the Multum-Ha and Choo-Ha cenotes on the way back.

Grouper or snapper marinated in red achiote and bitter orange, cooked in a banana leaf. A coastal Maya specialty.

Tulum's signature dishes: poke bowls, açaí bowls, and organic smoothie bowls. Raw Love, Co.con.amor, and Ki'bok are the best.
Green Chaya

Tips Experts Toucan

Real tips that guides don't give you. 8 on-the-ground shortcuts to save time, money, and frustration.

🌿
Sargassum

Check the front radar before leaving.

May to August: seaweed on the beach, variable depending on the year. Official website cemzlmar.com For the Quintana Roo daily radar.

Airplane
Airport

Tulum (TQO) or Cancun (CUN)?

TQO opened in December 2023, 30 minutes from Tulum. Convenient but few long-haul flights. CUN remains the main option (1 hour 45 minutes transfer).

🚲
Transportation

Bicycle > car for the beach

The road to the beach gets crowded during peak season. Rent a bike ($8/day) in the town = 25-minute ride, no traffic jams, free parking everywhere.

💦
Cenotes

Organic sunscreen required

Conventional sunscreens are prohibited (they contain chemicals that are toxic to the ecosystem). Approved brands: Stream2Sea, Mexitan, Caribbean Solutions.

💸
Budget

Town = 1/3 the price of the beach

Eating in the pueblo (Antojitos La Chiapaneca, Burrito Amor) = $8 vs. $35 in the hotel zone. Same quality, sometimes even better.

Classical building
Ruins

Tulum at 8 AM, Cobá at 2 PM

Tulum: opens 8 AM, ideal light, no crowds. Cobá: shade from trees in the afternoon, cooler than in direct sun.

💵
Cash

Cash at the ruins & cenotes

Credit cards are rarely accepted for admission and parking. Be sure to bring cash in pesos (Tulum admission: $90 MXN; Gran Cenote: $250 MXN).

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid for 6 months after return. FMM card (~$30) issued upon arrival; must be kept for the duration of the stay.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Book the beachfront hotel without checking for sargassum: The beach may be closed due to seaweed from May through August.
  • Visit the ruins of Tulum at 1:00 p.m.: crushing heat, no shade, overexposed photos.
  • Diving into a cenote with classic cream: ecotoxic, some cenotes deny entry.
  • Book everything on the beach: count 2x the price of the pueblo for equivalent quality.
  • Walking alone at night outside the hotel zone: Beach route, very poorly lit, taxis or bicycles recommended.
  • Touching wildlife in cenotes Freshwater turtles and fish are protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions we're asked most often about Tulum.

How many nights to plan for in Tulum?
3 nights minimum to soak in the three faces (ruins, cenotes, beach). 5 nights to truly disconnect — morning yoga, cenote day, beach club at sunset. Yucatán combination: 3 Cancún + 4 Tulum + 3 Mérida + 2 Holbox = the balanced formula.
When are there sargassum on the beach?
Sensitive period: May to August. Variable quantity depending on the year (very little in 2023, large volumes in 2018-2019). December to April: perfect conditions almost guaranteed. Check cemzlmar.com or Sargassum monitoring network before booking.
Cancún Airport or Tulum?
Tulum Airport (TQO) opened in December 2023, 30 minutes from the city – convenient but with few direct flights from Europe. Cancún (CUN) remains the primary solution For European travelers: direct flights Paris/Brussels, then a 1 hour 45 minute transfer to Tulum.
What budget should I plan for?
Tulum has gotten expensive. Expect to pay $200–350 USD/night in a nice boutique hotel, $500–1,500 USD/night In the Zona Hotelera Signature (Be Tulum, Azulik, Casa Malca). Town: $80–150 USD/night. Meals: $15–25 USD in town, $40–90 USD on the beach.
How many cenotes can you visit in one trip?
Honestly, 3 to 4 cenotes are enough to grasp the magic without being overwhelmed. Our on-the-ground combo: Gran Cenote turtles, Two Eyes (snorkeling + diving), Calavera Cenote (jumps), Sac Actun (underground system). A full day on foot/bike from the pueblo.
When to see sea turtles nesting?
May to October On the public beaches of Tulum (Tortuga, Pescadores). Peak in July-August. Observation supervised by local NGOs (Centro Ecológico Akumal) — flash photography prohibited, respectful distance mandatory.
