Playa del Carmen — a former Maya fishing village that became the 3rd most dynamic city in the Yucatán. Halfway between Cancún (1H N) and Tulum (45 min S), it combines the festive urban life of a beach resort with the authenticity of a still human-scale town.

In the heart of the city, the Fifth Avenue (5th Avenue) — 4 km of pedestrian street with restaurants, bars, shops, art galleries. On the beach side, crystal-white sand and turquoise Caribbean water. And right opposite, the ferry to Cozumel (30 min) opens access to the world's 2nd largest coral reef.

  • ❌ Book the beachfront hotel without checking for sargassum: The beach may be closed due to seaweed from May through August.
  • ❌ Eating on the Quinta between Calle 4-14: prices x2-3 vs Calle 30+. Same dishes, same wholesale suppliers.
  • ❌ Cozumel cruise passengers at 11am: Mamita's packed. Go at 10am or 4pm to enjoy it.
  • ❌ Akumal without a guide: stressed turtles, fine, expulsion. Always a certified local NGO.
  • ❌ Drinking tap water: Not potable. All hotels provide filtered water—bring a water bottle.
  • ❌ A car for the center: one-way streets, tricky paid parking. Everything is walkable.
