About Puerto Vallarta

The jewel of the Mexican Pacific

Puerto Vallarta — founded in 1851 on the Bay of Banderas (33 km, the 4th largest bay in the world), this former port city became, in the 1960s, the iconic setting for the film *The Night of the Iguana*, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Since then, it has been one of the top destinations the warmest in Mexico : well-preserved colonial architecture, a sparkling bay, and the lush Sierra Madre in the background.

Heart of the city: the Malecon, 2 km seaside promenade adorned with contemporary sculptures (the «Caballito,» «En Busca de la Razón»), terraced restaurants, beach clubs. Church of Guadalupe with its wrought iron crown inspired by that of Empress Charlotte, it has become the emblem.

Our on-site recommendation: a minimum of 4 nights in Puerto Vallarta + 2 days in Sayulita (45 min North). It's the best Pacific duo: cultural city + hippie surf village.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • All-inclusive permanent PV's culinary and cultural scene. Go out at least one night out of two in the Centro.
  • Marietas without a reservation: Strict quota UNESCO. Without reservation 2 weeks in advance, access denied.
  • Hurricane season (August-October): Tropical rains, sometimes hurricanes. Prefer December-May.
  • Ignore maritime safety: some unregulated beach clubs. Prefer those with bandera azul (quality flag).
  • Drinking tap water: Not potable. Filtered water at the hotel, reusable water bottle.
  • Walking alone at night outside the city center: Very safe center, but avoid isolated areas at night.
