Baja California — a 1,665 km peninsula running along the Pacific and the Sea of Cortés, one of Mexico's wildest and best-preserved destinations. La Paz — capital of Baja California Sur, 250,000 inhabitants, authentic Mexican atmosphere (zero mass tourism). 5 km Malecón lined with palm trees and whale sculptures. 25 min N: Playa Balandra, one of Mexico's most beautiful beaches (turquoise lagoon, access limited to 450 people/day).
Of October to April, the whale sharks (the largest fish in the world, 12 m) come into the bay of La Paz to feed. Snorkeling supervised by marine biologists, strictly regulated access ($120/pers, 3h). At Los Islotes (1h by boat N): swim with sea lions , playful (year-round).
Loreto — a Pueblo Mágico founded in 1697 by the Jesuit Juan María de Salvatierra, the first Spanish mission in California. The Mission of Our Lady of Loreto overlooks the colonial plaza. Offshore: Loreto Marine National Park (UNESCO) — 5 islands, 800 marine species, snorkeling, kayaking, diving.
From January to March, the gray whales travel down from Alaska (10,000 km) to the lagoons of Magdalena Bay (Pacific coast) to give birth. What makes them unique: these whales willingly approach the boats and let themselves be touched (“friendly whales”). Day tour: 4h drive + 3h outing ($180-250).
Baja = one of the most diverse deserts in the world. Cardón (the largest cactus in the world, 20 m, 200 years), cirio (endemic), elephant tree. 4×4 excursion into El Vizcaíno (UNESCO), Sierra de la Laguna (waterfalls, hot springs), or the San Francisco rock paintings (10,000 years old, UNESCO).
