The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve protects 26,000 hectares of primary cloud forest. 13 km of trails crossing the heart of the sanctuary, sometimes punctuated by suspension bridges above the canopy. A mythical place where Cousteau, Attenborough, and all the world's naturalists come. Strict quotas (240 simultaneous visitors) - RESERVATION REQUIRED.
À Selvatura Park, unique path of 8 hanging points (longest: 170 m) winding through the canopy. Panoramic view of the cloud forest, treetop wildlife observation: oropendolas, capuchins, sloths. Complementary site: Sky Walk (Sky Adventures) with 6 bridges. 2-hour tour, easy level, family-friendly.
Costa Rica invented the canopy/zipline concept in 1995, and Monteverde is the global epicentre. Sky Adventures propose 11 zip lines (the longest: 770 m, speed up to 70 km/h), the Tarzan swing (45 m free fall), and the Superman position (lying face down facing the jungle). Selvatura Park or 100% Aventura are the alternatives. Thrills guaranteed.
Monteverde and the Cordillera are a production area for high-altitude Arabica coffee (1200-1500 m). Guided tour of a finca (Don Juan Coffee, Monteverde Coffee Tour or Life Monteverde) : see coffee tree, coffee cherry, drying, roasting. Tasting at the chorreado — Traditional method using a cloth filter. Often combined with a cocoa and sugarcane mill.
The Curi-Cancha Reserve, which is smaller and more exclusive than the Grand Reserve, is THE spot to see the resplendent quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) - the sacred bird of the Maya. Breeding season March-June = best chances. A local guide knows exactly where the breeding pairs are (males with long turquoise-green feathers). Also: motmot, trogon, oropendola, and capuchin birds.
The Monteverde region is organized around Santa Elena (the village, base of stay) and of cloud forest reserves (biodiversity sanctuaries, 7–15 minutes from town). Understanding both will help you make the most of your days.

Fog descends from 9-10 AM. To see the canopy and clear bridges: enter exactly at 6 AM (opening time). Otherwise, accept the fog as part of the cloud forest experience.
Fog + wind + altitude = cool atmosphere, especially in the morning and evening. Sweaters, waterproof jackets, closed-toe walking shoes. Many underestimate this and spend their trip shivering.
Breeding season = March to June = maximum chances. Curi-Cancha (smaller, quieter) > Main reserve for the quetzal. Dawn 5:45 AM = most active bird. Local guide essential.
Transfer from Monteverde to Arenal by jeep + boat on Lake Arenal + jeep (3 hours, $35 per person). The most convenient and comfortable option. Book upon arrival in Santa Elena or through DMC. Avoids the direct route (over 5 hours on dirt roads).
Monteverde at night = another planet: kinkajous, opossums, two-toed sloths, frogs. 2-hour tour with a naturalist guide, red flashlight provided. Bajo del Tigre Trail or Refugio del Sapo. Book in advance.
Sky Adventures = longer lines, Tarzan swing. Selvatura = a more comprehensive experience (zipline + bridges + butterfly houses + hummingbirds) all in one visit. 100% Aventura = spectacular Superman position. Choose based on your preferences.
Local desire to preserve the forest = gravel road for the last few kilometers. 4x4 recommended during the green season (rainy season). Journey longer than expected – start early to enjoy day 1.
Passport valid 1 day after return date is sufficient. No visa for Europeans (90 days). Entry card to complete upon arrival at SJO/LIR.
