Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions most frequently asked about Corcovado and the Osa Peninsula.

How many nights to plan for Corcovado?
3-4 nights minimum (travel alone takes the day). 1 day Sirena Station + wildlife, 1 day Caño Island diving OR mangroves, 1 day relaxation at the lodge OR whales in season. More = repetitive.
Drake Bay or Puerto Jimenez as a base?
Drake Bay = wilder, Siren's access by boat, top for Caño Island. No road. Puerto Jiménez More accessible, more varied lodges, access to Sirena by plane or Carate-La Leona, route from SJO. Both have their charm.
How to get there from SJO?
"Vol Sansa/Skyway 40-50 min" translates to "Sansa/Skyway Flight 40-50 min". ($130-150/person round-trip) to PJM or Drake. This is the recommended option. A 6+ hour drive from SJO via the Pan-American Highway—tiring and long.
When is the best time to go?
Sweet spot December to April (dry season, passable trails). Avoid: September-October (heavy rains, sometimes closed stations). Green season May-August okay, accepting rains. Humpback whales 8 months/year (July-Oct + Dec-March).
Family-friendly?
Yes, from 10-12 years old. Sirena hiking 4-8 hrs/day with guide, not for young children. Family lodges available (Bosque del Cabo). Whale watching + Caño Island excursions OK for families. Avoid with children < 10 years old.
What budget should I plan for?
