Pura Vida · About Puerto Jimenez

The southern hub from the Osa Peninsula

Puerto Jiménez — small port on the Sweet Gulf, unofficial capital of the Osa Peninsula and South access base to Corcovado. Former gold-prospecting town of the 80s, now an ecotourism hub. More accessible than Drake (direct flight + road), it's the traditional gateway for travelers exploring Osa.

The experience is multi-rhythms : Karat (1h drive from PJM) = access base La Leona Station Corcovado, deserted beach. Cabo Matapalo (30 min south of PJM) = Lodges with signature (Lapa Rios, Bosque del Cabo) and private trails. Excursions Sweet Gulf = humpback whales 8 months/year, dolphins. Big game fishing trips from Crocodile Bay.

Our on-the-ground advice (DMC has been on site since 2018): 3–4 nights in Puerto Jiménez (or Cabo Matapalo) — 1 day at Corcovado Sirena by plane (15 min), 1 day at La Leona via Carate, 1 day whale watching in Golfo Dulce. Sansa flight SJO-PJM (40 min, $130).
