About Caye Caulker

The island that made «Go Slow» a philosophy of life

Located 32 km northeast of Belize City, Caye Caulker is an 8 km long, barely 2 km wide, island of sand and mangroves, lost in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. No cars, no traffic lights, no traffic jams: you get around by bicycle, golf cart, or barefoot in the sand. The motto «Go Slow» is painted on the walls in blue letters—and printed in the head of every inhabitant.

The island was cut in two on October 4, 1961 by Hurricane Hattie: a natural channel — The Split — separated Caye Caulker Village from the northern tip, which has since become a popular spot for swimming, cold beers, and sunsets. At 1 kilometer only from the west coast, the Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO 1996) boasts the second largest coral reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef — Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley sanctuary, where you can swim with nurse sharks and stingrays.

Our on-the-ground tip: spend at least 3 to 4 nights. Caye Caulker should be savored slowly — a dive in the morning, grilled fish at noon, a hammock nap, sunset with a beer in hand at Lazy Lizard. Nothing more, nothing less.

The 5 experiences signature

What we systematically recommend to our travelers in Caye Caulker. With, under each experience, the on-the-ground secret that makes the difference.

1 Snorkeling with nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley in the Caribbean Sea
🐠 Iconic snorkeling

Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley

The ultimate signature experience. A half-day boat trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Mayan for «small channel»), marine reserve created in 1987 — Belize's first. Corals, parrotfish, groupers, barracudas. Then head for Shark Ray Alley where one swims among the nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum, 2-3 m, docile) and spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari).

🤫 Secret Pro : Go on a half-day morning trip (8 a.m.–12 p.m.), when the sea is calmer, the underwater light is ideal, and the marine life is more active. Expect to pay ~$65–75 USD per person; mask and snorkel provided.
💡 Tip: Carlos Tours, Anwar Tours, and Caveman Snorkeling Tours are the most reputable operators — small groups (10-12 max), respect for the reef.
2 The Split of Caye Caulker, a natural channel created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961
🏖️ Mythical place

The Split and Lazy Lizard Bar

The natural canal that cuts the island in two since October 4th 1961, when Hurricane Hattie sliced through Caye Caulker. It is now the island's most iconic swimming spot: wooden pontoons, crystal-clear 27°C water, and the Lazy Lizard Bar who watches over - official slogan« A sunny place for shady people »You drink an ice-cold Belikin with your feet in the water, jump off the pier, and talk to people from all over the world.

🤫 Secret Pro : Go there between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM to experience the sunset with the locals — a much more authentic atmosphere than during the midday tourist rush.
💡 Tip: to walk (or swim) to the northern tip to discover an almost wild area with a few small huts and no crowds.
3 Barefoot cyclists on the sandy paths of Caye Caulker
🚲 Lifestyle

Biking and barefoot walking in the village

Caye Caulker cars prohibited We can traverse the island by bike, golf cart, or on foot along packed sand paths. Three parallel streets — Front Street, Middle Street, Back Street — a few side streets, wooden houses on stilts painted blue, yellow, and pink, palm trees swaying in the trade winds, and reggae music drifting softly from the wooden counters. The rhythm of the island is «Go Slow» painted everywhere—on walls, signs, and T-shirts.

🤫 Secret Pro : rent a bicycle for the day (~10 BZD/day) or a golf cart (~80 BZD/day) from Buddy's or Island Rentals to explore the quieter southern point.
👑 VIP Option: Guided sunrise bike tour with photography stops (~$45 per person, 2 hours) — the empty streets and golden light capture the very soul of the island.
4 Caribbean sunset over the sea from a Caribbean bar pier
Sunsets

Sunset bars on stilts

Caye Caulker is oriented towards the west (lagoon), making it one of the best spots in the Caribbean for sunsets. Our winning trio: Iguana Reef Inn (private pier, cozy ambiance, crafted cocktails), Crocs Sunset Bar (a wooden pier facing the ocean, a reggae soundtrack, a young, international crowd) and Sip 'n' Dip (pool + bar with your feet in the sand—perfect for couples).

🤫 Secret Pro : Arrive 45 minutes before sunset (around 5 p.m. in winter, 6 p.m. in summer) to get a spot at the edge of the dock and the first beer at happy hour prices.
💡 Tip: order a Belikin Stout or a One Barrel Rum Punch — Belize's two signature products, brewed and distilled locally.
5 Kayaking in tropical mangroves with turquoise waters
Gentle adventure

Kayaking & SUP in the Northern Mangroves

Beyond the Split, the northern part of Caye Caulker—known locally as «The North Caye» — stretches for kilometers of red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle), juvenile tarpon sanctuaries, herons, frigatebirds, and sometimes... West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) that come up to graze on the underwater seagrass. Kayak or paddle excursion at sunrise = pure silence, crying birds, mirror-like water.

🤫 Secret Pro : 2.5-hour guided tour (~$40 per person) with Caye Caulker Eco Tours = double the chance of seeing a manatee and a thorough briefing on biodiversity.
👑 VIP Option: Private sunrise outing with breakfast on a sandbar (~$120/couple) — a rare experience.

Gastronomy

Creole Flavors & Caribbean

Caye Caulker's cuisine is a dialogue between Belizean Creole heritage (British Honduras heritage), the Garifuna tradition from the southern coast, and Hispanic Mestizo influence. All this is set to the rhythm of daily fresh fish arrivals and slow cooking over a charcoal grill.

Chicken stew with rice and beans
~$8 USD — flat rate

Tacos, garnaches & salbutes
~$2-3 USD — per piece
Mestizo street food. Crispy tortilla topped with shredded chicken, beans, grated cheese, pickled onion, and spicy habanero sauce. Buy it on the street in the evening from a candle-lit counter.
Fry jacks for breakfast
~$5 USD — breakfast
Fried dough triangles, puffy, served with scrambled eggs, refried beans, local cheese, and jam. Iconic Creole breakfast. Errolyn's House of Fry Jacks refers to this.
Shrimp ceviche
~$12 USD — entry
Giant conch meat marinated in lime, red onion, tomato, cilantro, habanero. Conch season: Oct → June. Habaneros and Hibiscus make it the best, eat it with your feet in the sand.

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips that guides don't give you. 8 field shortcuts to save time, money, and frustration on Caye Caulker.

Airplane
Access

Domestic flight vs. water taxi

Tropic Air flight (15 min, ~$95 USD): comfortable with views of the reef. Water taxi (45 min, ~$22 USD): economical but rough when it’s windy. Our recommendation: take the flight on the way there (for your first experience), and the water taxi on the way back (once you’ve acclimated).

💵
Silver

USD everywhere, but cash is king

BZD 2:1 to USD, US dollars accepted everywhere. Only one bank (Atlantic Bank) with an ATM on the island, long lines. Withdraw 300-400 USD in Belize City before boarding.

🌀
Season

Hurricane June-November

There is a real risk of hurricanes in September and October (the island was devastated by Hattie in 1961). Outside of these two months, the green season remains a viable option and is 30% less expensive. Purchase insurance that includes cancellation coverage.

🦟
Health

Sandflies in the early evening

Small biting midges are active at sunrise and sunset, especially after rain. Use DEET 30% insect repellent or lemon eucalyptus oil. Cover your ankles and calves starting at 5:30 p.m.

🐠
Snorkel

Reef-safe sunscreen required

Belize has banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate (toxic to coral) since 2020. Buy Stream2Sea or Suntegrity in France before you leave. There's a shortage on the island or prices are 3x higher.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 30 days

Passport must be valid for 6 months after your return; departure tax is approximately $40 USD (included in the plane ticket). English and Belizean Creole are spoken everywhere; French is very rare. A basic knowledge of English is essential.

🚲
Transportation

No car, golf cart limited

The island only allows bicycles, golf carts, and walking. It takes 15 minutes to walk across. Golf carts are only useful for luggage or families. Maximum pedestrian safety — very chill community.

🌿
Culture

«Go Slow» is not a slogan

It's a way of life. The servers take their time, the shops open when they open, the boats leave when they're ready. Complaining is useless. Accept it, slow down, enjoy it—otherwise, choose another island.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • One night in Caye Caulker: Minimum 3 nights to get the rhythm and do at least 1 snorkel outing + 1 full sunset.
  • Compare with Ambergris Caye: Caye Caulker is simpler, less polished, more authentic. It's a choice, not a flaw.
  • Touch sharks or corals: forbidden, immediate degradation of the reef and stress to animals. Keep 2m distance.
  • Drinking tap water: Filtered or bottled water is mandatory, frequent dysentery for non-locals.
  • Choosing the wrong water taxi company: San Pedro Belize Express and Ocean Ferry only, the others are unreliable.
  • Walking barefoot in Split at night: Sea urchins and broken shells, frequent injuries. Water sandals recommended.
  • Underestimating the tropical sun: At 17°N, UV index 11+. Hat, UV shirt, reef-safe SPF 50 sunscreen.
  • Complain about the local pace: «Go Slow» is cultural. Adapt or change your destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions we're asked most often about Caye Caulker.

How many nights to plan for Caye Caulker?
3 to 4 nights is the ideal duration. Count 1 day for Hol Chan snorkeling + Shark Ray Alley, 1 day for sunset + bike ride + The Split, 1 half-day for mangrove kayaking, and free time for doing nothing. 2 nights minimum to make the transfer from Belize City profitable. 5+ nights for a real disconnect or if you combine a Blue Hole dive (long excursion from the island).
Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye, which one to choose?
Caye Caulker = smaller, rougher, more authentic, more rastafarian, no cars at all, chic backpacker vibe + couples. Ambergris Caye / San Pedro = bigger, more developed, upscale hotels, golf carts everywhere, international restaurants. The choice depends on the character: if you're looking for polished comfort, Ambergris; if you're looking for the soul of the island, Caye Caulker. Many combine both (45 min by water taxi).
Is Caye Caulker safe?
Excellent security. Very community Relax, the economy (100%) is dependent on tourism; pickpocketing is extremely rare. Standard island precautions: do not leave your beach bag unattended; do not walk alone after 11 p.m. outside the city center; keep your passport safe in the hotel safe. On an island just 8 km² in size, everyone knows each other—social self-regulation is very strong.
What budget should I plan for?
From $80–130 USD/night in boutique-charme (Sea Dreams, Colinda), $180–280 USD/night Premium waterfront (Iguana Reef Inn). Local eatery meals $8–12, Front Street restaurant $20–35, fine dining $50–70 (Habaneros). Hol Chan snorkeling excursion $65–75 per person, mangrove kayaking $40, round-trip domestic flight PGIA–CUK ~$190 USD.
Can you scuba dive the Blue Hole from Caye Caulker?
Yes, but it's a Full-day excursion Challenging: departure at 5:30 a.m., 2.5-hour boat ride one way, 3 dives including 1 at the Blue Hole (40 m, Advanced Open Water certification required), return between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Price: ~$320–380 USD per person; operators: Belize Diving Services or Frenchies Diving. Alternative: Spend 2 nights on Long Caye at Lighthouse Reef for a more relaxed diving experience.
How to get around once you're on the island?
No car, no bus. On foot for 95% trips (all within 10–15 minutes). Bicycle Rental ~10 BZD/day to go to Split or explore the south. Golf cart ~80 BZD/day useful for luggage, families, or people with reduced mobility. Water taxi to get to Ambergris Caye (45 min) or Belize City (45 min).
