Mount Isabel de Torres cable car

Visit the only cable car in the Dominican Republic climbs in 8 minutes to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres at 793 m. At the top: a replica of Christ the Redeemer (a nod to Rio), 7 hectares of botanical gardens, and a 360° view of Puerto Plata Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Cordillera Septentrional. Fog rolls in quickly in the late morning - aim for the opening.

Secret Pro : arrive at 9 a.m. on the dot to get a clear view. After 11am, the summit is often in the clouds.

Tip: return ticket ~$10, to be paid in pesos to save money; botanical trails to the summit, allow 2h on site.

💦 Water adventure

27 Charcos de Damajagua

The Dominican Republic's signature aquatic adventure: 27 linked stunts carved into the limestone of the Cordillera Septentrional. We hike up the river, wearing helmets and life jackets, then jump down (up to 5-10 m) or slide down the natural toboggans - a «no-jump» option is available for children or the more cautious. Crystal-clear water, dense jungle, guaranteed thrills.

Secret Pro : arrive at 8 a.m. to avoid cruise groups disembarking at 10 a.m.; do at least the 12-stunts version to deserve the decor.

Tip: closed shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops), GoPro recommended, secure locker on site for belongings.

🪁 World capital

Cabarete kitesurf & windsurf

Cabarete is one of kitesurfing and windsurfing capitals of the world of the Caribbean. The crescent-shaped bay offers a unique combo: constant thermal winds of 15-25 knots (trade winds from December to August, peak January-February), shallow water, soft sandy beach, French and English schools, international atmosphere, sandy bars and restaurants. Kite Beach (mornings for windsurfing, afternoons for kitesurfing) is the epicenter.

Secret Pro : morning = windsurfing and SUP (lighter wind), afternoon = kitesurfing (thermals up); schools operate on a half-day basis to respect this rhythm.

VIP option : 3-day kitesurfing initiation with a private French-speaking coach (~$450), from take-off to first independent navigation.

🏰 Colonial history

Fortress San Felipe (1577)

Visit oldest intact European fortress in the Americas, built in 1577 by Philip II of Spain to defend Puerto Plata from English and French privateers. 2.5 m thick walls, moat, period cannons, view over the bay. Next door, the historic center: lively malecón, San Felipe cathedral, Independencia park, pastel-painted Victorian houses - a legacy of 19th-century tobacco and rum prosperity.

Secret Pro : combine the fortress with the'Dominican amber 10 min - unique amber with prehistoric insect inclusions (inspired by Jurassic Park).

Tip: admission ~$3, 1h tour; combine with tasting at the Brugal distillery (founded 1888) for a complete half-day heritage experience.

[BEACH+HISTORY] Sosúa

Sosúa beach, amber & larimar

Sosúa: small protected bay, turquoise water, reef accessible by snorkeling from the beach. But Sosúa is also a place for'moving story In 1940, the Dominican Republic was the only country to welcome 750 European Jews fleeing Nazism (Dorsa program). The Sosúa Jewish Museum tells the story of this little-known story. In Puerto Plata, the Amber Museum and the Larimar (a unique turquoise semi-precious stone mined in Barahona).

Secret Pro : snorkeling to the right of Sosúa beach (rocky side) - living reef, tropical fish, accessible without a boat.

Tip: buy larimar only in a certified store (Larimar Museum Puerto Plata) - the beach = frequent counterfeits.
