Located at Northeast Dominican Republic, the Samaná Peninsula stretches 50 km between the Atlantic and a protected bay. Three poles structure the experience: Samaná (the capital, a departure point for whales and Los Haitises National Park), Las Terrenas (very French and Italian «little Saint-Tropez», palm-fringed beaches, nightlife) and Las Galeras (the wild point, calmer, access to Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón).

Every year, from January to March, near 15,000 humpback whales (Humpback whale) come to reproduce in Samaná Bay — that's the world's first destination for their observation. The rest of the year, it is a peninsula of virgin beaches (Rincón, Frontón, Cayo Levantado, also known as «Bacardi Island»), emerald waterfalls (El Limón, 50 m), karst mangroves (Los Haitises), and fishing villages (Marigot).

From January to March, CEBSE boats are often fully booked 48-72 hours in advance. Book as soon as you arrive, ideally in the morning (9 AM) – the sea is calmer and the light is better for photos.

For very young children, avoid long 4x4 trails to Rincón.
Is it safe in the Samaná Peninsula?
Yes, the peninsula is one of the most peaceful areas in the country. Fishing villages, a close-knit community, and the CESTUR tourist police are present. Standard precautions: do not leave valuables in plain sight; take a taxi in the evening; exercise caution on the roads at night (limited lighting). Safety is better here than in Santo Domingo or downtown Puerto Plata.
