We hike up the river, wearing helmets and vests, then come back down by jumping (up to 5-10 m) or sliding down natural water slides—an «no jump» option is available for children or those who are cautious. Crystal-clear water, dense jungle, guaranteed thrills.

Cabarete is one of the Global capitals of kitesurfing and windsurfing of the Caribbean. The crescent-shaped bay offers a unique combination: constant thermal wind of 15-25 knots (trade winds from December to August, peaking in January-February), shallow water, soft sandy beach, French and English speaking schools, international atmosphere, and beachfront bars and restaurants. Kite Beach (windsurfing in the morning, kitesurfing in the afternoon) is the epicenter.

Sosúa Beach, Amber & Larimar

Sosúa: small protected bay, turquoise water, reef accessible by snorkeling from the beach. But Sosúa is also a place of'heartbreaking story In 1940, the Dominican Republic was the only country to welcome 750 European Jews fleeing Nazism (Dorsa program). The Sosúa Jewish Museum recounts this little-known chapter. In Puerto Plata, the Amber Museum and the shop of Larimar (unique turquoise gemstone, extracted in Barahona) prolong the discovery.

  • ❌ Buying larimar on the beach: tinted resin counterfeits. Prefer the certified museum in Puerto Plata.
  • ❌ Book Cabarete without checking the kite season: June = hurricane pic, wind less reliable. Prefer Dec-May.

The best season for kiteboarding in Cabarete is from December to April, which is the dry season. The trade winds are strongest and most consistent during these months.
The kitesurfing season in Cabarete runs from December to August thanks to the constant trade winds, with a January-February picture (wind 18-25 knots, dry sky). March-May is also excellent (reliable wind, warming water). Avoid September-November (hurricane season, less consistent wind). All French-speaking schools are open during high season.
Is it dangerous on the North Coast?
The tourist areas (Cabarete, Sosúa, Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata center) are Generally safe during the day and at night. Prudence standards: do not display valuables, use official taxis after 10 PM, do not wander alone from pedestrian areas at night. The CESTUR tourist police patrol the main locations.
How to combine Puerto Plata with other Dominican Republic destinations?
Natural combinations: Samaná (3h east, whales Jan-Mar), Jarabacoa Central Cordillera, whitewater, Santo Domingo (3:45 PM south, UNESCO colonial city).
