About Bayahibe

Fishing village, Caribbean pearl, antithesis from Punta Cana

Founded in 1874 Founded by Juan Brito, a fisherman from Puerto Rico, Bayahibe remained for a century a village of about a hundred people living in tune with the rhythm of the yolas and the lobsters. Even today, in the morning, you can see fishermen returning with their catch—horse mackerel, dorado, and grouper—lined up on the wooden pier facing the bay.

Bayahibe is the gateway to the Cotubanamá National Park (formerly Parque del Este), established in 1975: 791 km² of land and 419 km² of marine areas, which protect Saona Island (110 km²), Catalina Island, and mangroves, cenotes, and the St. George shipwreck. A sanctuary 1 hour and 30 minutes from Santo Domingo and 1 hour from Punta Cana.

Our on-the-ground tip: 3–4 nights to combine Saona, Catalina, diving in St. George, and relaxation—the perfect authentic getaway for those looking to escape the giant resorts in Bávaro. Plan your trip at Toucan Dynamics.

The 5 experiences signature

What we systematically recommend to our travelers in Bayahibe & Saona. With, under each experience, the on-the-ground secret that makes the difference.

1 Paradise beach of Saona Island with coconut trees and turquoise water
Absolute postcard

Saona Island — Cotubanamá Boat Tour

The jewel of Cotubanamá National Park. 110 km² of coconut trees, white sand beaches, and turquoise water. Classic combo: catamaran on the way there (music, entertainment), stop at the natural pool (sandbank in the middle of the sea with starfish), lunch at Hand Juan (the only village, 500 fishermen), return by speedboat via the Catuano Canal.

🤫 Secret Pro : Leave early (7:30 am) privately from Bayahibe directly — avoid the tourist departures from Punta Cana which arrive in massive numbers between 11 am and 3 pm. Saona empty by 4 pm.
👑 VIP Option: Private yacht charter for 8 passengers, including a lunch stop at Mano Juan at Doña Carmen’s (lobster caught that morning, ~$650 per group).
2 Scuba diving at El Aquarium coral wall in Isla Catalina
🤿 Signature Dive

Catalina Island — El Aquarium wall

A unique island, 30 minutes by boat from Bayahibe. ""El Aquarium"" is a coral wall that drops off steeply from 5 to 30 m, one of the most beautiful dive sites in the Caribbean: sea turtles, eagle rays, barracudas, giant gorgonians, and schools of parrotfish. Visibility is 25–30 m most of the year.

🤫 Secret Pro : Casa Daniel and ScubaFun (Bayahibe) are the two most reliable PADI centers - small groups, French-speaking instructors available.
💡 Tip: Snorkeling is also possible for non-divers — the "Aquario" beach is at the top of the wall, level with the water, perfect for families.
3 Wreck St-George covered in coral on a deep dive
Wreck diving

St-George Wreck — Sunken Japanese Cargo

A Japanese cargo ship 110 m, intentionally sunk in 1999 to create an artificial reef off the coast of Bayahibe. Now colonized by corals, it is the premier wreck dive in the Dominican Republic: depth 20-40 m, safe penetration into the holds, giant groupers, green moray eels, tarpon schools.

👑 Required Level: Advanced Open Water or equivalent (FFESSM Level 2) - minimum 25m. Penetration: Wreck specialty recommended.
💡 Tip: Pair with a dive on the Atlantic Princess (another wreck more accessible at 12m) for a complete 2-tank day.
4 Authentic village of Bayahibe with its colorful houses and fishing yolas
🎣 Authenticity preserved

The fishing village of Bayahibe

Founded in 1874, Bayahibe is one of the last Dominican villages where fishing remains a part of daily life. At dawn, you can watch the return of the yolas — traditional wooden boats painted in bright colors — loaded with grouper, dorado, and lobster. The fish is cleaned right on the pier and sold to the cabins in the village.

🤫 Secret Pro : Breakfast at Doña Clara's (facing the pier) - local coffee, mangú, and fried fish with the fishermen around 7:30 AM. Total authenticity, Dominican prices.
💡 Tip: Traditional fishing trip on a "yola" with Capitán Felo (~$45/2h) — hand-casting longlines, returning with your own catch to grill that evening.
5 Padre Nuestro Cenote with crystal-clear turquoise water in a limestone cave
💧 Secret Cenote

Padre Nuestro Cave & Spring

Inside Cotubanamá National Park, the trail Our Father leads to a limestone cave system (Cuevita del Diablo system) and to the Manantial — a crystal-clear underground freshwater spring that flows into a secret cenote. Easy 30-minute walk, swimming in water at 24°C, perfectly clear. Little known to all-inclusive hotels.

🤫 Secret Pro : Local park guide required (~$15) — he knows where to find the Taíno cave paintings hidden in the caves, which are invisible to casual hikers.
💡 Tip: Leave at 7 a.m. to have the cenote all to yourself before 10 a.m. Bring a swimsuit, water shoes, and a headlamp.

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips that guidebooks don't tell you. 8 insider tips to save time, money, and frustration in Bayahibe and on Isla Saona.

Saona

Depart from Bayahibe, not Punta Cana

The Bávaro tours arrive in droves between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and leave at 4 p.m. From Bayahibe: a 30-minute boat ride, arriving at 9 a.m.; the beach empties out after 4 p.m. It’s a world of difference.

🐠
Scuba diving

Casa Daniel & ScubaFun = Recommendations

2 PADI 5-star centers, French-speaking instructors available, small groups, modern equipment. Avoid operators at large resorts (groups of 12 or more).

🌀
Hurricane

Cyclone season June-November

The south coast is less exposed than the north coast (Samaná, Puerto Plata). Real but limited risk. If departing June-October, purchase comprehensive cyclone cancellation insurance.

Airplane
Airport

LRM La Romana is more practical than PUJ

La Romana (LRM) at 30 min vs. Punta Cana (PUJ) at 1h. Air France and Air Caraïbes direct Paris flights in season. Otherwise, flight to SDQ Santo Domingo + 1h30 transfer, organizable directly via Dynamics.

Starfish

Don't take the stars out of the water

At Saona's "natural pool," the red starfish dies in 30 seconds out of the water. Observe underwater, underwater photography only. The park is monitoring.

💸
Budget

Eating in the village = 60% cheaper

Resort restaurants: $40–60 per meal. Village cabins or local eateries: a full fried fish meal for $10–15. Saona Café, La Bahía, and Mare Nuestro are top picks.

🛂
Formalities

Tourist map included

Since 2018, the tourist card ($10) has been included with the airline ticket. No EU/CH visa required for stays of less than 30 days. Passport must be valid for 6 months after return; e-ticket must be completed online.

💵
Currency

USD and Dominican Peso

The US dollar is accepted everywhere (resorts, excursions, tourist restaurants). For village cabanas and tips: Dominican peso (DOP). ATMs in the village are limited, so get cash in La Romana.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Saona in 1 day from Punta Cana: 4-hour drive + boat for 3 hours on the island, exhausting day. Sleep in Bayahibe.
  • Touching starfish: They die out of water. Underwater photo only.
  • St. George Dive without Advanced: 25-40 m depth, insufficient level = serious risk.
  • Buy beach excursions Shady operators, overcrowded boats, questionable safety. Go through a DMC.
  • Hitchhiking out of Bayahibe at night: La Romana-Bayahibe route poorly lit. Private taxi or Uber from Dominicus.
  • Book your hotel in Bayahibe from June to October without insurance: Hurricane season = possible cancellation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Bayahibe and Isla Saona.

How many nights to plan for in Bayahibe?
3 to 4 nights Is the right dosage: 1 day Saona, 1 day diving (Catalina or St-George), 1 half-day Padre Nuestro, 1 day relaxing on the beach/village. To combine with La Romana / Altos de Chavón and Santo Domingo, showing 7-8 nights on the south coast.
Is Bayahibe better than Punta Cana?
It all depends on the project. Bayahibe = authentic fishing village atmosphere, smaller hotels, world-renowned diving, direct access to Cotubanamá and Saona. Punta Cana = mega all-inclusive resorts, giant Bávaro beach, more direct flights, more entertainment. Our advice Bayahibe for travelers who want a nature and cultural dimension.
Is Saona Island suitable for families?
Ideal. Shallow, clear water with no current in the natural pool. Red starfish visible at the water's surface. A rhythmic catamaran ride for the kids, a sensational speedboat return. Bring organic sunscreen (the park monitors chemicals) and a hat—there's no natural shade on the beaches.
What budget should I plan for?
All-inclusive 5* (Dreams Dominicus, Iberostar): from 180-260 USD/person/night. 4* (Be Live Canoa) : 110-150 USD/person/night. Excursion Saona: $90-130 USD/person depending on the mode (group / private). 2-tank dive: $100-130 USD. Padre Nuestro Cenote: $30-50 USD with guide. See real-time prices on Dynamics.
Do you need a visa for the Dominican Republic?
No visa required for EU and Swiss nationals for stays less than 30 days. The tourist card (10 USD) is now included in the plane ticket since 2018. Passport valid 6 months after return date. Fill out the'Dominican eTicket 72 hours before departure.
When to observe sea turtle nesting?
Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) lay eggs on the remote beaches of Saona— Catuano, Punta Catalina, Palmilla — enter April and October. Observations only supervised by park rangers (never unsupervised, never with lights). Peak season for hatching: July-September.
