The agency Toucan Discovery

Are you planning a trip to Costa Rica or Central America? Here are the answers to the questions travelers ask us most often, about our agency and trip preparation.

Who is Toucan Discovery?

Toucan Discovery is a French-speaking inbound travel agency (DMC) created in 2023 and based in San José, Costa Rica. We design tailor-made trips and escorted tours in Costa Rica and Central America, combining local expertise, charming hotels and ecolodges, and French-speaking assistance on the ground.

Yes. Our whole team speaks French and supports you in your language, before and during the trip. It's one of our strengths: you have a French-speaking contact based in Costa Rica, available if needed on site.

Our agency is located in San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Being in the field lets us select our accommodations and providers directly, negotiate fair rates, and react quickly during your stay.

A tailor-made trip is built around your wishes, your pace, and your budget: you're independent (often with a rental car), with an itinerary designed for you. An escorted tour follows a set program, in a small French-speaking group with a guide, with guaranteed departure. We offer both formulas.

The simplest way is to build and visualize your trip in real time on our engine Toucan Dynamics. You can also write to us at admin@toucandiscovery.com or via WhatsApp: our French-speaking team replies and refines your project with you.

Our specialty is Costa Rica, but we also organize trips to Panama, Nicaragua, Belize, and Central America more broadly, including multi-country combos.

Preparing your Trip to Costa Rica

Seasons, ideal length, budget, car rental, safety, formalities: the essentials to know before you go.

When to visit Costa Rica?

The dry season, December to April, offers the most stable, sunny weather. The green season, May to November, remains very pleasant, with showers mostly in the afternoon and brilliantly green landscapes. The month-by-month detail is in our guide When to go to Costa Rica.

A week is enough for a first taste (one or two regions). Allow 10 à 15 days for a balanced trip, and three weeks to explore the country in depth.

On the ground, plan about €1,500 to €2,500 per person for a week (accommodation, car, activities, meals), excluding airfare. The details of the three budget tiers are in our article budget for a Costa Rica trip.

For an independent trip, a car is the most flexible formula. Allow about €70 per day, basic insurance included, with a 4×4 recommended in the green season. All our advice is in the guide car rental in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is one of the safest destinations in Latin America and can be visited with peace of mind, taking the usual precautions (don't leave valuables in plain sight, especially in the car). We detail it all in the article is Costa Rica dangerous?.

For French, Belgian, Swiss, or Canadian citizens, no visa is required for a short tourist stay: a valid passport and an exit ticket are generally enough. The up-to-date details are in our guide formalities and visa.

The official language is Spanish; English is common in tourism, and our team assists you in French. The currency is the Costa Rican colón (₡); the US dollar is widely accepted and bank cards work in most establishments.

Yes, it's an ideal family destination: spectacular nature, reasonable distances, and reassuring infrastructure. See our advice for a trip with children or with a baby.
